Whats the deal with Marvin Williams? everyone said he was gonna jump to the NBA this year and I havent heard that he wont but NBAdraft.net took him out of their mock draft. was this a mistake or is he staying at chapel hill?
Marvin, like Rudy Gay or Josh Boone is capable of significant improvement. Boone's offense needs some work,Marvin W and Rudy G need to get tougher in traffic, get serious about D. Early season projections assumed more progress than happened, and I think their coaches would tell them to wait a year. Williams or Gay can declare anyhow and would likely go top 10,but a year of hard work and they can look much better. However,NBA Draft.net,while a well done site has no crystal ball-nor do I.
The mock drafts that basketball sites put out are so inconsistent. And I am assuming the sites that don't have Williams are guessing he will stay. I don't think he will, I see him being a top ten pick.
Williams is a top 5 pick in this years draft. I know the Raps wouldnt mind having him if he's around at 7 or 8 which is doubtful. I see Charlotte grabbing him at 2.
Two things happened in the championship game for Marvin Williams. After winning the title, his reasons to return have been taken care, so I expect him to declare. However, the way he played, I think his stock is at an all-time low. He got outplayed in the post by a much shorter Robert Powell. Powell beat him up on the inside and easily got position on him for offensive boards, the NBA is even more physical, I'm not sure how he will handle it. I am high on Marvin Williams still, but he might have dropped a couple of spots. I'd like to see him get to the free throw line a lot more as well.
Powell and Ingram were pushing around the UNC interior as a whole a lot, not just Marvin. Granted Marvin probably got the brunt of it, but they gave UNC all they can handle on the offensive glass. I think Marvin's stock took a little bit of a hit but not enough to take him out of the top five.
There is no question that this game hurt him and put his stock at an all time low, I agree with what Shape said. He struggled, the most important game of his career, and he didn't show up..but there is no way you can determine if that is going to be consistent..every player has bad games, no one is judged on one game. I do expect him to declare though, he won a championship already, there is nothing left in college for him IMO, unless he loves the lifestyle and chooses that over the money.
jea Marvin Williams going into the championship game was a top 3 pick IMO. Unfortunatly regarding the NCAA tournament people put too much stock into a single game. He may have dropped out of the top 3 which increases his chances of going back to college when he could be the #1 pick next year with the age restrictions.
I still think Marvin Williams is a top 3 pick regardless of how he did in the championship game. It is a draft and the main thing people are concerned about it POTENTIAL and Marvin Williams has tons of it. IMO people would be foolish not to pick this guy with the top 5 picks in the draft if they get a chance.
Actually I have had an ongoing arguement about Marvin. I see a physical package that's got clear high pick aspects, but anyone can box him out for a rebound and his inside game, when it gets crowded and rough, isn't much. I felt that in their final 4 games he did at least make some efforts on D and the boards compared to what I saw earlier. That said, earlier,I felt he way way apathetic about defense and as for rebounds, basically just waited for an easy one to come to him, while May was scrambling and banging to get every possible board. Some NBA teams will see a guy missing the drive to be a star. Some will see the upside and figure he can be motivated. I think he connects well with Coach Williams who will advise him that he ought to return and display dedication and a much more complete game. He may have other's telling him he's an instant superstar and there is megabucks and big fun for the taking-so who knows. I think another year at UNC can mature him and make it more likely he does have a great NBA future.
Well, from what i've heard, his stock hasnt taken a huge hit, but more questions are around now about his game than before. Like his ability to control a game, dominate if need be and have the mean streak a player must have in his heart to be a super star. I love his play, his athleticism is unmatched, but his strength and overall tenacity MUST improve. His shooting touch from deep is great for a player his size, he can finish on the break like nobody's business. But he was beat on too often downlow and had too much trouble finishing which really shocked me. I WILL NOT say that Illinois in that game man handled the whole UNC front court as sunsfan thinks. May ABUSED, yes ABUSED the Ilinois inside, once i recall flat out knocking Roger Powell on his arse! In any event, I think Marvin should come back, be the head of this soon to be young team. Felton, GONE, McCants, GONE, May, GONE, and Marvin Williams could stick one more year with the incoming class, along with David Noel, Quentin Thomas, and Rayshawn Terry and UNC will still be a young fun final four potential team, as is ANY team Coach Williams is at the controls of.
May has given a pretty good hint,if not an absolute pledge he intends to return and is hopeful of persuading others-Marvin being who he likely has in mind. Felton's stock is real high now,McCants has slipped a bit,but he doesn't believe it. If Marvin is wise he will learn the in-the-paint game from May. I saw a few plays where May had so many things going that a defender had little chance.
