I don't know if this was common knowledge among Minnesota fans, but I just learned it today. As always, I was reading Sid Hartman's article. Apparantly, in the weeks before the trade deadline, New Orleans offered guard Baron Davis to the Timberwolves for Wally Szczerbiak. So I just wonder now what could have been if we would have launched that trade. Szczerbiak has been great for us, but I think a guy like Davis could have been a major sparkplug also. Don't get me wrong, I don't like Davis' attitude and how he plays the game, but talent is talent. Thoughts on the possibility that we denied?
That imo would not be that strong of a move....Davis in my opinion is overatted and has always been overatted. All the Wolves would have done by that trade is add another guy who can only be effective with the ball in his hands. And you lose Wally's ablity to spot up in the process, which stretches the defense. While I definately think it was a mistake not trading Wally last offseason but only for a bigman not another perimeter player, especially not one who needs way more shots then him to be effective.

If we were looking to let go of Hudson or Cassell, I'd think it MIGHT be feasable, but by that same token, Davis has been having some injury problems also. Plus, Davis is not as consistent with his scoring as Sam is........anyway if this was the only thing going....I would have said no too.

But me personally, I still wouldnt like that either, imo opinion to many guys looking to dominate with the ball in their hands on offense without moving without the ball. I know I knock Wally from time to time, but I give him credit at least he tries to move without the ball and space the floor.
While Baron Davis would be a talented player for Wally you have to take account for his oft-injured back. On that alone and his price tag i doubt id do that deal.
Another reason we didnt trade for baron...is that his contract is gurantted...but is not insured...so if he would of gotten hurt Taylor would of had to pay all of it out of pocket. Not like when Brandon got hurt for us...the insurance company picked up 85% of his salary. So with his injury history he is a dangours player to pick up Dollar and cents wise.
Im a huge Baron fan, but his ball-hogging tendecies, poor conditioning, and big contract would not have boded well for Minnesota. With our big current contracts, we don't need another one.
Why was that trade declined? Because Sczcerbiak is worth more, and the management knew it. Baron Davis is a relatively overrated player, who only gets his reputation from rare tripple-double performances. Beside that, he is injury prone and needs the ball too much. If that trade would have gone through, I think the problems might have escalated. With Sprewell, Cassel, Hudson, Carter AND Davis at the guard position, who would have played? That would have caused more troubled at the guard rotation and weakened us at the small-forward. Wouldn't have been good. Wally should be traded this offseason. You may not realize it, but he actually has great value on the trade market. He is one of the rare players in the league who can shoot all over the floor, which gives him high value right there. But he also can play just as well of the bench as being in the starting line-up. Many teams would love to have Wally, so hopefully we can work out a trade that gets us some good value in return. I dont know anything off-hand, but it'll be ime to start thinking about it now that the off-season begins next week.
