Very interesting clause in LeBron's $90 million Nike contract

On ATH today, Jay Mariotti brought up a point about a clause in LeBron's Nike contract which states that his $90 million contract could be worth well over $100+ million if he played for certain NBA teams, namely the Knicks and Lakers. This gives him even more of an incentive to not sign with the Cavs longterm and go to either the Lakers or Knicks.

Kobe is probably already on the phone trying to recruit him [IMG].

LeBron shouldn't base his professional basketball decisions on a Nike endorsement deal.

Who are you telling him what he shouldn't base his decisions on?

You know, if LeBron wants to go, then let him. Just go to the Knicks where you'll never make the playoffs but at least you'll get the zillions of dollars you're wanting.

if LBJ went to the Lakers then i would die a very happy man

but i doubt thats gonna happen. the Organization cannot afford to keep these two guys on the same team. The ego would also be a problem if ever they were in the same team. but hey who knows? stranger things have happened

Both are good friends and both have been humbled for not making the playoffs by themselves as the man. Together they would be a very tough duo to play..

Hard to imagine this ever happening. I think Kobe & LeBron could co-exist and would be a great duo, but the Lakers simply don't have anything to offer the Cavs in return for LeBron.

    Exactly what Shape said.

Kobe and LeBron could both exist, easily. They are both two of the hardest working players in the league. They both have an enormous amount of respect for each other's games, and I think would both be willing to push aside ego's to win championships, in essence, that is what they both want...to win championships.

Will it happen? If it does, mark me for President of the United States of America, we don't have anything to offer...

First of all, I don't believe that this is actually a clause in his contract, it's more of a fact. Moving to LA or NY would increase sales of his product, simply because those are the two biggest markets in all of sports regardless of how the teams are playing.

Kobe and Lebron could probably co-exist, as Shape said. However I think that Buss and Mitch will try to wait and see how the Kobe-Caron experiment plays out. Why pay Lebron when you can not pay Caron?? (Haha). Seriously, Caron is a much cheaper investment, and has proven them he can average 23-25 ppg when Odom is not on the floor. He's doing all this at the end of the year too, on tired legs. Ideal second option, and he's not good enough to open his mouth and make Kobe mad.

The Lakers aren't really screwed as far as ticket sales either, they do just fine. No need to bring in another superstar.

but why do "just fine", when you can have a sellout every game? [IMG]

I defenitly agree about the two of them being able to co-exist, remember Kobe used to defer to Shaq. I think the truth is that even NY has more to offer than the Lakers.

No, its a clause in his contract. The money per year is nearly double if he goes to LA, NY or boston. It is a fact that he would also get even MORE endorsements but for the Nike one it is a clause.

Yep, the certainly do such clauses for endorsements. Bigger market = more money, simple as that.

Here's a little trivia question: which team was the number one selling team in jersey sales?? The Lakers...and we sucked this year. The rest of the jersey sales stats are here.

I would rather dump kobe and get lebron. I really like lebron's game and he would help the lakers a lot more by getting more people involved than just himself. Did you see yesterday's game against the warriors. Kobe went 9-27..horrible. I would much rather see lebron in LA than kobe. Kobe is a good player but I dun know if he has what it takes to make his players better.
