I think that the way the game is officiated now a days is frustrating for players. There are too many touch fouls. I know that these rules were put in place to boost scoring and the like, but the inconsistency of the calls have become outrageous.

There are games when guys get trucked over on one end and there is no call then a guy on the other end gets a foul for a stupid hand check. Is that basket ball?

Refs dictate the game by their calls and lately you dont know how the game is being called. If your calling touch fouls call them on both ends of the court. If your allowing a physical game call the fouls accordingly.

Another problem is that the refs are not calling actual calls they anticipate a call. you will hear the whistle before anything happens and you will see the replay and the guy was never touched.

I know that the refs are human beings but sometimes the way games are being called, i some times wonder " is this fixed?". Im not saying that games are fixed its just that sometimes it appears that way. When teams come back because what wasnt a foul 2 mins ago is now a foul is rediculous. I know its up to the players to adjust to the officiating but when there is no consistancy it makes the game frustating and confusing for players and Fans alike.

    Let me know your opinions.

    yea

I understand where you are coming from I think that the only fouls that should be called are real hard hits. Little touches of the hand and small hits shouldnt be called.

The one I've also been noticing are the anticipation calls, followed by a make-up call on the other end. I think everyone is trying to adjust to the new rule changes, and there's probably a group of refs who liked the NBA more physical than calling touch fouls. Also the refs never call fouls when players grab another guys jersey. Hopefully it improves next season when both the players and refs have adjusted a little more to the new rules.

It depends on where and when the touch happens. If a guy is touched on the elbow while shooting, it should be called becuase it does effect the shot. Overall, I have been frusterated for a while, so nothings new with me. The reason is we call this a man's game but the slightest touch has the refs blowing whistles. It really makes me wonder what the older generations think of todays game. From who I have spoken to, they think it's "Sissified". I can understand impeding the offenders PROGRESS (meaning the offensive players has already established a direction or motion) being called, but I've seen when a defender is between the offender and the rim with his hands up, the offender creates contact by driving into the stomach of the defender and the foul is on the defender. It just makes me wonder, what is the defender supposed to do? Just say "well he put the ball on the floor so here's a red carpet to the rim"? I've seen teams that have been labeled "Defensive Stoppers", so it seems that they get away with more than other teams. Personally, I wish they would:
    a) get rid of the headfake-defender jumps straight up-offender jumps INTO him-foul called. I have seen games where the offender will be called for a foul in this instance. You also KNOW when the offender is trying to make a shot and when he is just doing this.
    b) be more consistent on what follow-through is (when someone is fouled and they take 2 more steps and then shoot).
    c) be more consistent on what deserves a technical. If player A slams the ball high and let's it drop, it's whatever, but if player B (Sheed example [IMG] )just stares at an official or does the "whatever" wave, he's on technical 1.5.

Good point on the technical fouls. Its not fair for a guy to get a tech for staring, or other things that dont belittle the ref. The guy gets a fouls against him and gets a T for staring. The refs have their favorites with who the call certain calls on. Some of them have bad feelings for certain players ( due to past altercations) and cant wait to blow the whistle.

And with the hand check, I belive that if two hands on a ballhandler is a foul, Then it should be a offencive foul when a guy with the ball slaps the defenders hand away to protect the ball. these rule changes gives the offence a much greater advantage then they already have.

And when a guy is backing you down hard i guess ur just supposed to let him pound you in the chest with his back.

I absolutely agree with you especially on that point. That and the preference that big name players get on calls. So many travels that are allowed and inconsistency depending on the player. Charges are called on the level of acting not if the defensive player had their feet set.

I know reffing is not easy but the first rule should be "call what you see not what you expect". Better to miss a few calls here and there than give some that never happened.

How do you feel about this, you know when someone is fouled and the ref wait's to see if he hits the shot? You know, if the shot doesn't drop then the whistle blows, but if it does he doesn't call it.

Thats another thing that pisses me off! Great point! Are they calling the game or watching it?

Dont forget to post the crazy calls during the playoffs because you know that there is always questionable calls during the playoffs.

    Question about NBA officials.

I was just wondering if anyone could answer this for me.

When an Official is working the playoffs is he assigned to a specific series or do they alter the Officials with every playoff game?

    If that didnt make sence:

Do the same officials officiate a whole series?

I also hate when the commentators calling the don't know the game.
In the 76'er - Piston game, Iverson was called for his second foul when Hamilton jumped in front of him and the commentator said "Your feet do not have to be set for a charge, you just have to beat your man to the spot". I don't know how many times a player is "Beaten" to the spot but the block it called. I can understand when an offensive player pushes off or dips the shoulder, but Iverson was crossing over and driving when Hamiton decided to get a closer look.

    They rotate them.

The best officiating I've seen in the playoffs so far was the Nuggets & Spurs first game. They were consistent and let the players determine the outcome of the game.

The Celtics v. Pacers game last night was terribly officiated. And so was the Houston game, Yao Ming should have received a lot more calls. In the start of the game Dampier received 2 fouls, Van Horn got 3 fouls, and Bradley picked up 1 or 2 guarding Yao. Then the refs swallowed their whistles when Dirk tried guarding Yao. Plus all the shoves Yao was taking underneath, allowing Dallas to get 2nd chance opportunities.

The calls can be frusterating, but

As long as scoring stays above 100 for at least one of the teams, and it's not OUTRAGEOUSLY one-sided calls, I'm happy.

I hated how the Pistons and Spurs could just manhandle anybody and get away with it, and most importantly making the game so friggin BORING!!

I don't give a damn if older generations think the game today is "sissified", because first and formost, sports are supposed to be enjoyable. Watching a game where the teams STRUGGLE to reach 80 points is 99% of the time NOT ENJOYABLE. Why wouldn't I just rather watch hockey? Jeez.

It can be as "enjoyable" to see a team with great defense go to work. You can't appreciate seeing a trap-steal-fast break dunk? Well, I guess it would depend on if the defensive team had any scorers, because if they didn't I could understand your dilemma. Just because a team can put the ball in the hoop doesn't make them fun to watch. I don't find the Sonics an interesting team to watch, but I do like the Pistons. You can't help but love the Suns though [IMG] . I've even seen games where neither team is defending and the halftime score is like 45 - 46 because the teams are just shooting blanks at that time. Do you not mind the game stopping every 1:35 minutes because of a foul call that sends a player to the stripe. It increases scoring but the energy is gone. It's the old argument of "Flash vs. Substance".

That's the exact thought I had when I read the title of this thread. This last Sunday night in the Suns/Grizzlies games, there were about eight or nine calls on both ends of the floor that really made me think about the quality of officiating in the league. The first thing I noticed was that almost anytime there is a fastbreak and a block, they'll call it a foul. Regardless of whether or not the block is clean, the officials seem to always assume that there is contact. What's even worse is when the offensive player gets hurt on that fastbreak and it was just because of a bad landing, not the defender's contact, yet they still call a flagrant foul on the defender. The second thing that I noticed is that a lot of the times, a little guy will draw a foul just by driving into the post. It's kind of a win-win situation if the reffs are bad enough; either you drive in and score or you drive in and the minute you touch the other team's big man you get the foul. I can't remember which game where I saw this happening a lot this weekend, but it might have been with Dwyane Wade in the Heat/Nets game; I'm not sure.

I don't agree. I don't mean to say good defence isn't important. However, the trap-steal-fast break dunk...I dont' know, I think fast breaks, dunks are way more common in fast paced games than slow paced, don't you?
And I cannot remember any games where neither team is defending and both are off on shooting.
I'm not saying the league should stop playing defence and just try to outscore each other...but the grind it out games that are totally defence oriented are incredibly boring to watch, almost a chore (it feels like watching soccer or hockey, where nothing seems to happen for the longest time).
Watching a Pistons game usually puts me right out. Better than sleeping pills I tell you.

But to get back on topic, I agree that the calls can be frusterating. But I think the main source of the frusteration is that there are a lotta inconsistencies between the officiating of different games. However, most of the time if not all, the referees try to be fair. And part of sports is overcoming adversity. Just look at the Rockets Mavericks game last night. The Rockets were being dealt idiotic calls, but they overcame.

Overall, I would rather have it like this, higher scoring, shooting percentages soaring, more up and down teams, than last year's half court, grind it out style for a lotta teams.

All i want is consistency among the refs. The NBA needs to make rules about calls, not guidelines. Rookie/Veteran calls piss me off the most, Dirk Nowitzki is a great example. He gets a ton of calls when he is on offense. And when someone posts him up he flops and the refs call offensive fouls. Basically the only weak part about Dirk's game, defense, cannot be used against him due to the refs giving him "veteran calls".

They should just let the game go and when it starts getting physical call the fouls. A free flowing game is better then a start stop game. Miami had 5 or 6 players today who were on 3 fouls or more and some were on 1 or 5. The game cant be so start stop, or transition wont even be a part of the game. Phoniex would be in trouble!
