Interesting article from dallas morning news.. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Classic comparison These Mavericks look a lot like the Rockets - the '94 model 10:58 PM CDT on Friday, April 22, 2005 By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News There are a lot of similarities between the Mavericks and Rockets ? good defense, star power and 3-point shooting, for starters. But we propose that a better parallel for the 2005 Mavericks is the 1994 Rockets, not this season's version. Think about it. The '94 Rockets had probably the best foreign player ever in the NBA leading the way, Hakeem Olajuwon. The '05 Mavericks have Dirk Nowitzki, who is fast becoming one of the top international players of all time, as long as you exclude those who went to American colleges like Tim Duncan and Patrick Ewing. Those '94 Rockets had a nasty-tempered backcourt player, Vernon Maxwell. Jerry Stackhouse has an edge, too, although he's not as volatile, unless you go Kirk Snyder on him. The Rockets had strong-armed Otis Thorpe. Erick Dampier is Thorpe-Lite. Kenny Smith? Jason Terry. And get this: Smith had come to the Rockets from Atlanta, just as Terry did to the Mavericks. And those Rockets of old had a rookie named Sam Cassell and a second-year, defensive-minded athlete named Robert Horry. We give you Devin Harris and Josh Howard. In fact, there seems to be only one thing separating the '94 Rockets from these '05 Mavericks. Houston won a title in '94. Maybe they'll have even more in common by June. </div> http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...h.3976d794.html Go Mavs!!!
sorry but this years mav's are NOWHERE near those 93-94 Rockets...first off, you have no dominant low post player in Olajuwon, who could get you a basket anywhere, anytime...Nowitzki is nice but has no post game...second, your defense does not come anywhere near that of the Rockets that year, where I believe they were ranked first in the league...third, Rudy T>>>>Avery as a coach, plus the Rockets had a more stable core of role players (Horry, Cassell, K. Smith, Elie, Thorpe, etc)... its actually an insult to compare this years Mavs to the 93-94 Rockets...I guess writers will find ANYTHING to write about nowadays...
UUUUUUUUUUMMMM NO! U cant comare Dirk to hakeem they are two totally different players. just because they are both foreigners? Dude you compare championships to championships, Holla when they get a ring homie!
Dampier is Thorpe Lite? LOL. I wonder if this guy ever even watched Otis Thorpe play. They are totally different players ... completely.
Stop it.The Mavs arent the favorites to win it.Theyre not even the runner up favorite to win it.The Mavericks also dont have Hakeem Olajuwon. So no,theyre not like the old rockets.
Eddie Sefko wrote the article. That name sounds really familiar. Did he used to write for the Houston Chronicle or something back in the 90s? I don't see much similarity to be honest. The Mavs are a relatively young, athletic team which doesn't collectively have much experience. They also don't have a dominant low post game, and they're offense is more outside-in versus inside-out. That Rockets team was a veteran team, and they were also one of the top 2 or 3 defensive teams in the league, thanks to a great defensive front court (Hakeem, OT, and Horry). And Dirk and Hakeem are very different players who's skills lie in different areas. Though you could definitely argue that Dirk is the second best international player to play in the NBA after Hakeem (that is, if you exclude Tim Duncan and Patrick Ewing from the discussion).
Sefko was grasping at best. This team is NOT that similiar to that Rockets team in the early to mid-90's. I think Sefko was just trying to meet a deadline.
The 93 '94 Rockets would kill this current Dallas team (and probably our Houston team also).............Hakeem would make a fool outta Bradley just like he used to when Bradley was younger....Dampier is no where near O.T., and Maxwell is better than Stackhouse....and yes Sefko used to be a writer for the Post or Chronicle.........he still pops up on 610 every now and then to give his thoughts on the NBA.
The Mavs look like a good, deep team, but they've had a bit of a change in the focal point of attack. This being Dirk Nowitzki rather than Steve Nash and Avery Johnson rather than Don Nelson. I think Dallas fans are selling their team too short. I still think Dallas could take the series if they play the right way and buckle down on D.
I agree with you custodian. This series is not over despite the bleak win-loss results so far. I saw some fight in the Mavs in game 2. They just need to keep it up and reduce the mental errors in game 3. Will it be enough to win a game in Houston? Only time will tell. Houston should have all the confidence in the world that it won't, but Dallas must continue to believe or else it may truly be over.

Dirk is being manhandled by Ryan Bowen and McGrady. Barry/James/Mutombo are outplaying Stackhouse/Van Horn/Harris. Finley is nearly nonexistant. No Mav is being consistent, and they flat-out look scared out there. They have no post presence, and they're just a bunch of jump-shooting wings. From day 1, I've said the Rockets would take this series. The Mavs still have no defense, and there seems to be no go-to guy. Nowitzki should be the guy, but when Stackhouse and Van Horn hesitate to shoot, it allows our defense to recover and man up. I will still give Dallas the benefit of the doubt and say they'll take 2 games (just because I'm a nice guy) but Rockets get this in 6...Just like I believe Phoenix and Seattle to be, the Mavs are a team designed for regular-season success but coming up short when it counts...
There is nothing the Mavs recent history to dispute your claim, shooter. But if the Mavs can improve each game and start playing like the team that closed out the regular season, then maybe they can still make a series out of this.
the only way that they are like the rockets is those rockets where down 0-2 and came back to win a series that year.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting michiganave17:</div><div class="quote_post">the only way that they are like the rockets is those rockets where down 0-2 and came back to win a series that year.</div> I was just gonna mention it...There's still hope! Dirk's gotta step up.
oK, I'm not feeling embarrased to be a Rockets' fan here as I've noticed I'm not the only one posting reply. But to be honest, this article makes too many farfetched resemblance btween the '94 Rockets and '05 Mavericks. Apart from those players' types that not exactly match, even on every position they're no comparative. So face the fact, buddy. I think you'll more satisfied with creating a model of '05 Mav by your team rather than get immersed in those unrealistic imaginations.

Bradley looks so weak at that "jock-sniffing dunk". Although, I'm sure he gets dunked on like that even in practice, so it ain't no thang.
