I'm very intrigued by this whole situation. As everyone knows, Williams was the #2 pick overall in the draft, so by picking him up you may be picking up a future superstar player. However, it's still a gamble. Almost no one has seen him play since his injury, especially on the NBA level. I think this will be comparable to Nick Collinson in Seattle. When he was drafted, he was a dominating college player, but then he hurt his knee. After coming back of a year of surgeory and rehabilitation, he was only half the player he was in college. While he was still effective, he was nowhere near the player he could have been had he not been injured.
Yeah, he was one of the best PG's to come out of Duke and you know how many great PG's they've had. If he could get back to full strength and play like he did in his college days, then you'll definitely be getting a great PG. It's really sad what happened to Jay, but I hope he comes back and plays up to his full ability.
I'm for it. Even though I hate duke, I loved Jason Williams in duke. Obviously he won't live up to the expectations given to him when he first entered the league, but I think he can make an impact. It's possible he can be doing what DeMarr Johnson is doing now for the Nuggets, next year with the Raptors. Jason's injury was more severe, however if we can get some limited production out of him, I would be happy. I don't really think there's a huge gamble in this case if we invite him to our summer league team and he ends up making the team, because he won't get a big contract anyways. He can't be much worse than Milt (sorry Milt). EDIT: ok, apparently he's going to be working out during the summer, which means no summer league, but we can still invite him to training camp. Hopefully we were the first team to contact him, and he decides to come to the Raptors camp.
The problem though is we don't have roster spots available, and we're most likely going to be overloaded at the 1. With Rafer locked up for 5 more years, Alvin is coming back next season. Also, it's very very likely that Babcock is drafting a point guard with either pick, so if Williams does make the team, that's 1/3 of the roster playing one position. I wish we can take a deep look at him before the draft.
^ True,, I really liked Omar Cook's play,, but I guess we won't be seeing him in Raptors uniform next season. IMO, he's a better decision maker with the ball than Rafer. Milt is probably gonna be gone in the off-season and like you said, Babcock will probably draft a PG so we'll have Rafer Alston, Alvin Williams, 1st round pick (I'm hoping Babcock uses the 16th pick to snatch Jarret Jack), and Jay Williams if he does make it. I'm a strong believer in assets however, and if Jay joins this team it's going to benefit us in that it gives us that much more flexibility in possible trades next season. (ie. If Jay does well and is ready for the starting role, we can look to trade Rafer (sorry Rafer fans but it's just my opinion) and if he doesn't do too well, we can either release Jay or include him in a deal since he will most likely be making a league minimum on a 1~3 year contract)
Honestly, I've forgotten about Alvin Williams. I love the guy, but he's going to get injured again. If/when Alvin does come back, I don't expect him to be playing major minutes. If he does, then I expect him to play at the 2 where he doesn't have to control the ball as much. If Jay Williams shows that he can play in the NBA...I would take him over Omar Cook. I'm praying that Eric Williams and Lamond Murray won't be on the team next year, because I want to replace them with 2nd round picks like Julius Hodge...Luther Head, whoever. PG: Jack/Alston/Jason Williams or Cook.. SG: Mo/Green/Hodge/Alvin Williams SF: Rose/Hodge PF: Bosh/Bonner/A-Train or FA -C: Pape/Hoffa/Woods Well I'm putting Green there even though I doubt he'll be there. That changes everything. If we don't get Green, we'll probably take Felton. Then with our 16th pick, Babs might take a big like Petro/Frye or McCants/Granger(if there). ! Can't wait for the draft.
From what I remember seeing in his game I thought he relied a lot on his athelticism and his outside shooting. We know that he won't be able to jump over or blow past defenders like he used to so a major advantage of his game is gone. IF we don't draft a point guard, I would still want to give Omar Cook another chance with the team. He doesn't play the best defense, he doesn't have a very consistent shot either but he has proven that he can run the offense more efficiently than Rafer can. As for Jay Williams, I think it would be imperative that he plays on a summer league team this year. If he can hold his own against those kinds of players than he deserves a shot at training camp.
Eric Williams for Willie Green from Philly. and then: Hoffa/16thPick/Woods Bosh/Bonner/Sow MoPete/7thPick Rose/W.Green Alston/Jay Williams/Alvin Williams And find what to do with Arron Williams, Lamond...
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting test:</div><div class="quote_post">i think eh will ultimately resign with the bulls they offered him money when they did not need to</div> I don't think either of them would want to be reunited. Not that they have any bad feelings for each other, but Bulls have like million point guards. They got Kirk Hinrich, Ben Gordon, Jannero Pargo, Chris Duhon and Frank Williams. That's 1/3 the entire roster (inactive / active). And out of the 5 mentioned, every one of them deserve to play decent minutes except Frank Williams, and if Jay Williams joined the list, he won't get any minutes.
