Seems like most of the people voting think the same thing. http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/sportsnation...g?event_id=1319 here are the questions if you don't want to take the poll.. make yourself heard! 1) What is your opinion of the $100,000 fine levied against Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy? 2) Do you believe officials have ''looked harder'' at Yao Ming than other players in Houston's first-round series? 3) Should Van Gundy reveal the name of the official he says is his source? 4) Should Van Gundy be further punished for his comments? 5) Overall, how would you rate the performance of NBA officials in the playoffs? 6) Should coaches be allowed to publicly criticize officials? 7) Do you believe officials officiate individual players differently? 8) Ming is averaging 19.8 ppg and 7.8 rebounds against Dallas. How would you describe his overall performance in the series? 9) The Mavericks lead the series 3-2 after Monday's win. What will happen?
My answers: 1) $100,000 is too excessive. I understand Stein wants to send a message for coaches NOT to question the integrity of the league, but I think the fine is too high. 2) Not enough information for me to believe either way. If there is statistical evidence to prove that Yao is being called for more fouls than other players, then maybe I can believe it. Otherwise, it is all just opinion. 3) Yes, if this official can provide evidence to support his claim, but he should have some type of whistle-blower immunity first before JVG reveals him. 4) If JVG reveals his source or ceases to bring his comments to the media, then no more punishment is necessary. 5) Overall, NBA officiating has been below average. 6) Not publicly, but a process where grievances can be reported and directly addressed should exist in the NBA. 7) If you don't believe that "star-treatment" exists, then you haven't been watching NBA basketball. 8) Yao is right on schedule in his 3rd year of NBA-level basketball. The scary thing is the fact that he can still get better. 9) I predict Houston will win game 6, but Dallas will win game 7. nice thread magnetik.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting bplld:</div><div class="quote_post">Its very surprising that so many people actually think the rockets can still take this thing.</div> why is it surprising? we barely lost in the last two games even with the bad calls.. if we win 1 in Houston, then the last game is a toss up.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting magnetik:</div><div class="quote_post">why is it surprising? we barely lost in the last two games even with the bad calls.. if we win 1 in Houston, then the last game is a toss up.</div> well i think it all depend on the Rockets. If they can stay positive (like you ) then they have a chance.. But if they come to the game feeling down or thinking about the refs, the calls, or other things besides playing hard then there's no hope for them. Fortunately, from what i heard in T-mac's post game interview, he said "Nobody's feeling down" and something like "We're not going to give up till they beat us once more". So hopefully, that's a good sign for us.
1) Way too harsh, especially for voicing his opinion...an opinion of FACTS... 2) During these last few games, yes...I think its obvious that they're scrutinizing Yao because of Cubans comments... 3) No, hes doing right...its wrong and a lack of character for him to "snitch" 4) No, I think 100 grand is enough... 5) C- 6) If they have substantial reasoning, yes...if it needs to be brought to the elague's attention, then, yes...but in a professional manner... 7) Of course...star players get more leverage and treatment...I think that is blatantly obvious... 8) Outstanding but he needs to stay out of foul trouble, although hes had some horrible calls on him the last few games that have forced him to sit out some time... 9) Easy. We win 2 straight. It's not the fact that I'm biased, it's just that I'll never stop believing.
1) What is your opinion of the $100,000 fine levied against Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy? It's exaggerated... 2) Do you believe officials have ''looked harder'' at Yao Ming than other players in Houston's first-round series?not really... 3) Should Van Gundy reveal the name of the official he says is his source?no... 4) Should Van Gundy be further punished for his comments? i dont thnk so... 5) Overall, how would you rate the performance of NBA officials in the playoffs? horrible! 6) Should coaches be allowed to publicly criticize officials? not really... 7) Do you believe officials officiate individual players differently? yeah... 8) Ming is averaging 19.8 ppg and 7.8 rebounds against Dallas. How would you describe his overall performance in the series? it's aight but he gotta help t-mac a lil more... 9) The Mavericks lead the series 3-2 after Monday's win. What will happen? they'll lose game 7 to h-town...
Yao decided to share the bill with Jeff. He'll send a cheq of 50,000USD to the bald man. My opinion goes: Too harsh Yes No No Average No Yes Impressive ( Not quite subjective tho) Rockets win, 4-3 (Clutch's showtime)
1. Crappy.. 2. Duh. 3. It would only make the problem bigger. 4. 100 Gs isn't enough? 5. I know blind men that could do better (Not trying to be offensive). 6. Yup. If they don't call out an actual ref, it's all good. 7. Hell no, but it always happens. 8. Stellar, a dominant force, he just needs the ball more. 9. Rockets win 6, Yao Ming gets a four-point play to win Game 7.
1. Harsh 2. Yeah 3. Yeah, it would definitely make it more legit 4. No, anymore and the guy will be broke 5. Like being ref'ed by blind guys 6. Yeah, everyone have their opinions 7. Yup 8. Okay, it would be better if he wasn't in foul trouble so much 9. I'll leave that to fate.
1. Somewhat. However, JVG did committed the worst crime that no sports franchise want to associated: The game is rigged. There is a reason why Vegas still can't get a single pro franchise and why Rose still can't get in to the HOF. If JVG said that Yao is punished by refs too harsh and mixed few f bombs, he probably would have gotten $10,000 - $20,000 fine. But, JVG tried to make that entire things are controlled by someone behind, and that moment, his comment went from complaining to conspiracy theory. That's why Stern dropped 6 figure fines to JVG, and while the amount may be too harsh, Stern had the right to fine JVG that amount. Frankly, I can't imagine why the league wanted to 'help' Cuban, who whined and whined years, or punish Yao harshly and isolated billions of Chinese, especially when the league tries to expand to the global. 2. I can't find a solid evidence that he was punished harshly. 3. No. 4. No 5. Below average to bad. 6. As long as they keep their complains under control and willing to write a check once in a while. 7. Yes. 8. Pretty good, especially when Dampier pretty much pushed around Yao in previous meetings. 9. Mavs win 4-2...
