I guess it's not just the Rockets fans that noticed that officiating totally sucked the yesterday... I can understand protecting the integrity of the game... but someone needed to buck up to Stern and MAKE HIM take responsibility for something for once instead of just fining everyone that has an opinion. This is totally a sign that we need replay. What's worse?.. waiting for a few seconds for a replay or bad officiating.. it's a no brainer for me. This is on the front page of Fox Sports today if anyone hasn't seen it yet. http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/3588876 "Jeff Van Gundy's conspiracy theory has David Stern all worked up. But Kevin Hench says the commish should be more upset about the terrible state of NBA officiating ... including the blown call that cost the Rockets in Game 5."
There is alot of talk about Van Gundy's future right now. Things like he may never coach again after this season. This has made me furious. Van Gundy has the right to voice his opinion and and if Stern wants to fine him thats ok. But you can't fire the guy or suspend him. If Van Gundy is not allowed to coach I will seriously hate Stern. Maybe even boycott the NBA.
Compelling article by Hench. As much as I think instant replay tends to bog the NFL game down, there is no substitute for getting the right call. Afterall, we have the technology for instant replay, why not use it?
Better yet there should be one ref, who is always at the monitors, getting angles that the others cant, and replaying questionable plays repeatedly, so he can just jump in and override the call.
You know.. I have been thinking a lot lately regarding the referees.. Is it just me or are the "veteran" referees almost too "veteran"? Meaning.. I noticed a few refs that looked like they are about 90 years old. Is there some sort of mandatory tests that they can keep officiating to the best of their ability? Seriously.. if people have to retake driving tests at a certain age or retire at a certain age from the airline industry.. how the heck is a 65 year old gonna go up and down the court hundreds of times a night and expect to make a good call in the fast paced action of the NBA? It takes a lot more skill to officiate an NBA game correctly than drive a car. Of all the major sports, I feel that good officiating is most important in the NBA. Everyone saw what happened yesterday, it could end up costing this team the playoffs. I am sure their eyesite and reaction times break down after a while and NBA players are getting faster and the game is getting more fast paced. I think we are seeing the "veteran" officials starting to break down with age. I really feel this way after seeing the Houston game and the San Antonio game... Bad officiating will hurt the integrity of the game more than a coach "calling out" the officials.
well instead of having just 3 refs, why not make it more refs lets say 3 on each side of the court or 3 on teh court and 2 looking at the replays of every angle possible of the same play? that would even be better, and the play did not cost the rockets the game that night. you guys forget that we missed free throws as well, even if stackhouse did not get his free throws we dwould have tied the game and the way the game was going i dont know who would have won, but it did not cost us the game.

I'm completely siding with JVG...the refereeing was atrocious, and somebody shouldve said something...Stern is being an idiot with all this power he has; someone merely stated their opinion (which also so happens to be FACT) and then he goes on some macho tirade over how this will be handled...the fact is, he needs to start looking at the game tapes...the fine is ridiculous and this whole "lifetime ban" talk better be just that..."talk"...Stern needs to realize he is only making his beloved league look worse because they will not admit where they are wrong, and will only respond by abusing their power, opposed to compromising or seeing whether there is truth to the comments...Basically the series is still 2-2 in my eyes...the refs won game 5...and i dont think there is any doubt as to who is the better team; its just a shame that the refs are content on officiating a Suns-Mavs series...
Its god to see that Rockets fans aren't the only one complaining about this bad officiating. Its proof that us fans don't just want our team to win, but we're looking for a good basketball league that gets it right. You want the team that plays the best and hardest to be winning championships, in your league in order to make it mroe popular.
in hockey, if the coach thinks a player is using illegal equipment (goalie pads too big, stick too long) they can ask the ref to look at it and measure them. If he's right, the other team gets a 2 minute penalty. If he's wrong he gets a 2 minute penalty. NOW, I'd like to see the NBA adopt something like that. If the coach thinks there was a blown play, they can review it on replay. If the coach is right, the call is reversed. If the coach is wrong, it's a delay of game and the other team gets 1 (or 2) free throws. That would have saved the play at the end of last game where Finley knocked the ball out of Jon Barry's hands while out of bounds. There will also be less complaining to the refs because if they complain and ask for a replay and they're wrong, they'll be penalized for it.
C'mon boys, lets use all those stupid calls and fines as our fuel to win game 6. No matter how bad they call it, the Rockets will play so good that not even the refs can ruin the game. Destroy the Mavs in game 6!! I LOVE JVG, I LOVE THIS TEAM!
I hope there would be a way to reverse a call based on a replay of action. It just sucks that referees decisions are always final. I know sometimes you can argue a call and turn in a favor on your behalf but it should be applied also on critical game situations where a team builds a momentum to try and win a game. I think there's enough reason already to inspire the Rockets to go out, be fired up and try their best to win the series. I'm positive that the Rockets can give a good fight.
the refs and their bad officiating really upsets me, and stern and his freakin absuing power is really stupid, he is making NBA look bad, not admitting their mistakes, this bad officating can cost us the playoff advance to the next round, this really sux!!!!
