<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">After the Grizzlies lost nine of their last 10 games this season, swingman Shane Battier was confronted with a question in acronym form: WWJD?

    What would Jerry do?

Battier, continuing his role as one of the most thoughtful players in the locker room, immediately chose a name other than Grizzlies president Jerry West.

The Grizzlies' offseason is as much about what coach Mike Fratello wants as what West will do.

That is to say, there won't be a public memorial service for the much-celebrated, 10-man rotation retired coach Hubie Brown introduced two years ago.

    But it's dead.

If the question this summer is whether the Grizzlies will form a new identity, then the answer is yes, and Fratello needs a roster in his mold to accomplish that.

"No question," Battier said. "I think it was Bill Parcells who said, 'If you're going to let me cook the meal, let me at least shop for the groceries.' Obviously, Jerry will work with coach Fratello this summer and get the players who best fit his philosophy. In any situation you need to have everyone on the same page."

That changes are in store is no mystery. Neither is how the Griz will go about reconstructing a roster that was talented on the court but tattered in the locker room. </div>

The media's love for turmoil is facisnating. During the course of the season and the Griz winning, it was literally impossible to find much buzz about the team. Now with drama of the playoffs, the JWill blowup, and obvious changes coming in the off-season, the Grizz are all over the media. Despite the recent events, the Grizz had a remarkable season, especially considering the way they persevered through injury after injury after injury.

I agree with Shane, the coach should be responsible for bringing in the best players to fit his system.

My question is who are those players?

I still say that we need to trade Pau Gasol, Jason Williams, and Bonzi Wells (if we have the rights) in a package deal for an All-Star caliber player. Stephon Marbury is on the trading block, and the Knicks need size. Perhaps we could ship Pau out to New York for Marbury. There are also rumors that Kidd wants out of New Jersey. He's getting older and his contract is a burden, so perhaps they'll sell him cheap. A deal where the Grizzlies send Gasol, Williams, and maybe Tsakalidas for Kidd would work out well for both teams. New Jersey would get their big men that they've needed as well as a point guard who works well in transition like Kidd.

I'm just sick of having twelve good players. I want one great player.
