<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Suns' Steve Nash or the Miami Heat's Shaquille O'Neal will win the NBA's Most Valuable Player award, to be announced next week. The race for the NBA's 50th MVP is too close to call. The Republic surveyed 104 of the 127 writers and broadcasters with MVP votes and found that Nash and O'Neal each received 51 first-place votes. Amar? Stoudemire of the Suns and Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs received the other two. The voting deadline was April 21 Based upon the 10-7-5-3-1 points system (10 points for a first-place vote, seven for second, etc.), Nash holds an 875-869 lead over O'Neal. When the announcement comes (likely Tuesday or Wednesday), it could produce the smallest margin ever between the winner and runner-up. Since writers took over the voting from players in 1981, the tightest races were when Magic Johnson edged Charles Barkley by 22 points in 1990 - despite Barkley having 11 more first-place votes - and when Karl Malone edged Michael Jordan by 29 in 1997. </div> Full Story
Why wasn't Nash an MVP when he was with the Mavs? Because he didn't play in the best starting 5 and didn't play in the COY's system that taylors the PG by surrounding him with 4 offensively talented players. Shaq is Shaq where ever he goes. He has 2 undrafted players starting on a championship contender. There's your MVP.

Not so for Steve Nash and the suns. I worry that the league is too mired in tradition to give the mvp to a (deserving) point guard that doesn't have all kinds of endorsement contracts with shoe companies and candy bar manufacturers.
Shaq is having a fairly mediocre season for him, individually. Steve Nash is having a career year, and has emerged as the best point guard in the game. The Phoenix Suns were pretty bad last year, and the only significant difference is the addition of Quentin Richardson and Steve Nash. If I had a vote, I'd give it to Nash.
My vote goes to Nash and if you ever watched the Suns without Steve Nash in the lineup or when he is just taking a break they are hard to watch. Without Nash in the lineup the Suns are an average team but when you plug Nash in there they become a championship contender. Nash gets my vote.
Will Nash become the first Canadian if he wins it? My vote goes to Nash...only because he's Canandian. A
A friend of mine who works for the Bulls' front office told me Shaq finished ahead of Nash by a point or two, but don't take it for granted because it was office talk.
I`m still going with Nash. Subtract Nash from the Suns, subtract success for Pheonix. Plain and simple.

Even if Shaq isn't playing, he gives confidence to any team and makes them a powerhouse whether he's on the floor or on the bench. If Steve is on the bench (with an injury), the Suns pretty much struggle. I'm going with Nash for MVP.
Definately Nash. Miami went to the second round of the playoffs last year so even if they didn't get Shaq they would still be good. Not to mention Pheonix's play without Nash.

Just look at both teams. Miami last year without Shaq got to the second round. Miami was pretty excited about this season due to their performance during the playoffs. However, they got a great player, Shaq, but they still would have been a good team in the playoffs without him. The suns had one of the most horrible season in franchise history. Then...they got an expensive PG, Steve Nash, who turned that horrible season in a 62 WIN SEASON!! The suns lost like 5 games straight with Nash injured..... Sorry...but Nash is the difference between a horrible team and an awesome team. Now...lets look at individual stats. Shaq's PPG, RPG, and FG % all went down this year. Almost every single stat for Nash went up this year. Now who deserves the MVP? NASH.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">All signs point to Nash winning NBA's MVP The NBA announced Thursday that the announcement of the Most Valuable Player, the NBA's 50th, will be Sunday. That could mean the Suns point guard has won a tight race with Miami center Shaquille O'Neal. Here's why: The NBA announced the previous five MVPs when the winning players were idle, and on a day before each had a playoff game. The Suns are expected to start their second-round series Monday. Miami is slotted for a Sunday start to its second-round series if Washington closes its series with Chicago today. If O'Neal is playing in Sunday's ABC game, it seems unlikely he would be the subject of the MVP halftime interview that ABC is promoting.</div> Link
