My question is why double team the mavs?????.....I mean if you really think about it they have no one that is double team worthy.....Dirk hasn't been playing good so why double him????......when we double team, that's when guys like Finley and Terry go off, if we keep a hand in their face, they're not as effective......I'd rather have Stackhouse and Dirk taking fall away jumpers than to leave guys wide open for 3 pointers.....if the Rockets stay at home on their man and do a good job of switching off on the pick n roll they should have no problem beating the mavs imo.

For instance, when a player has the ball on the block, it is a great place to double team. If you think of angles and what passes he can make there is no way someone is going to get an open shot. At best they are going to get a three-pointer with someone flying at them while they are shooting. When you are a good defensive team like the Rockets in the half-court and have some of the athletes that they do, it is a great way to force teams to speed up in the half-court and hopefully make a stupid mistake. Now your question is why double Dirk and Stackhouse no the low block. You have to realize that in the NBA, most star players that post up can make a turnaround fadeaway greater than 50% of the time. The major thing you have to worry about in basketball are streaks and when certain players get "hot". Take for example last night, at the end of the third quarter T-MAC was hot and when you are hot you are confident and pretty much every shot you throw up will go in. The reason you double players like Dirk and Stack in the post is because you don't want them to have the chance to get hot. When a player starts playing well he elevates his team to preform at new levels of confidence. Fact of the matter is when Dirk or Stack get hot, the whole Dallas team does which means bad things for the Rockets. Also realize a few things especially with Dirk and Stackhouse. They are mismatches for our defense. Tracy McGrady is not strong enough or tall enough to guard Dirk in the post, so unless we double him, we will get burned. Same goes for Stackhouse - David Wesley, John Barry, Bobby Sura or whoever we throw at him, is a size mismatch in favor of Dallas. Thus meaning we need to double.

Stackhouse is VERY good with his turnaround jumper when he has smaller guys on him (like David Wesley). I wouldn't double any of them right away, but sometimes you have to. The main problem for the Rockets giving up 3 pointers is transition buckets, not getting a hold of loose balls, and allowing penetration. I don't think many of the 3s have come off of doubling down on post players. I could be mistaken.
I actually think TMac can hold his own against Dirk and Stackhouse can give players trouble in the post, but I'd still rather have him shooting fadeaway jumpers instead of wide open 3 pointers........that's when everyone gets involved and that's when the Rockets get torched.
we double team dallas so we can limit their points and put up defense against dirk seeing as how we have nobody that can guard him with teh exception of mcgrady but then that leaves a disatvantage at aanother spot. we double team dallas as well because i think that the dallas is a very quick team and if we were to go 1 on 1 with them they would penetrate and get us in the paint.

JVG's defensive philosophy is to lock-down the paint and limit the opponents offense to low percentage perimeter shots. In this series, Dallas was least effective when they settled for outside jumpers which played right into JVG's philosophy. Dallas was most effective when their guards could dribble penetrate and suck the defense in, but left open shot on the outside. The difference being an open perimeter shot rather than a contested perimeter shot. Houston also focused on Dirk (being the most effective offensive player for Dallas in the regular season) and rendered him ineffective offensively all-series. They acheived this by sending a second defender as soon as Dirk floored the ball and forced him to pass on the move which led to turnovers. Dallas won against this defense when they made their outside shots and lost when they didn't.
