The free agent market is a pretty solid one this off-season. But unless the 76ers make some moves, then they aren't going to be able to afford much, if anything at all. The first Sixers priority already stated by Billy King is to keep the young core of players in a 76ers uniform. Billy King said he will match any offer for Dalembert, and do everything in his power to re-sign Green and Korver.

If we were to look towards free agency then we should go for role players, not players with egos. If the Sixers want to make a run then they are going to need a backup guard, and some help in the frontcourt. Some guys worth mentioning are, Brevin Knight, Shareef Abdur Rahim, Donyell Marshall, Flip Murray, and Stromile Swift.

I think we might be able to sign Marshall, but we won't be able to sign him for big money. The question would be is he willing to play for his home team for a pay cut. I believe he could be a valuable player for us if he were to sign with us, he can play defense better then most know him for, and his biggest asset is his ability to hit the long rang jump shot, which is an important element in Philadelphia's offense. Marshall is also willing to play off the bench, and unlike most of the 76ers current roster he can play consistently from the bench.

What the 76ers also need is a pure point guard who can lead a team. Even though Allen is going to be starting at point, they still need a player who can come in and create offense off the bench if Allen is struggling. A guy like Brevin Knight comes to mind. Knight is a solid point who has veteran experience. You have to give him his props because he averaged nine assists on a team that doesn't really have a lot of weapons offensively.

Wait a second there, is Iverson switching back to shooting guard? Because getting a pure point guard from the free agent market wouldn't make sense otherwise. Iverson plays close to the entire game so the free agent wouldn't be getting much minutes. Would you want him to just rot on the bench and just use him when Iverson is injured or something? I don't know, getting a point guard from free agency just doesn't make sense to me.

However, the problems that Philadelphia do need to address is a legit backup powerforward, a backup small forward, and probably a good shooter. Right now our frontcourt is pretty weak going by depth with just Rodney Rogers and Marc Jackson playing backup since first and foremost, we need to address that.

My opinion is bringing in Donyell Marshall if we can get him cheap would be the perfect solution. The guy can shoot jumpers, bang it downlow, grab rebounds, and hit the three- great for O'Brien's system. Plus, he would be giving Webber rest and also helping out Dalembert on the boards. For the small forward and shooter position, Korver definitely needs help. He's basically the only real small forward on this team since O'Brien doesn't use Barnes and Mashburn is practically retired. Joe Johnson would be my pick for this, but the only problem is that many teams are going after him and certainly Phoenix so his value is really high. Jon Barry would also fill this position in nicely- great hustle player, can shoot the three, and has nice energy for a veteran.

Wait a second, where did I say AI would switch back to shooting guard? With a pure point, Philly would be better off. They need a player who can create offense for others, that's something that AI stuggles to do at times. Besides don't you think Iverson deserves a rest at times. With a point guard that can play, AI will actually be able to get rest he deserves. It makes plenty of sense when you don't have one actual real point guard on your team, it's pretty much a must need.

There are a couple good free agents I hope we take a look at. If we did not resign Willie Green for some reason, and are looking to improve our defense signing a player like Chris Duhon to a offer sheet would be a improvement for the team in terms of becoming more hard nosed on defense. The big name free agent I believe will be in contract negotiations with the 76ers for much of the off season is Marshall.

He has been rumored to be intrested in playing for Philadelphia, and is a guy who could offer some range to the team, and give them two, maybe three legit three point threats with mckie, Korver, and Marshall himself. In the end however I think it will be tough for us to try, and make a big signing this off season besides our own players that is.

Samuel Dalembert will demand some money this off season then we are also concerned with bringing Kyle Korver and Willie Green back into the fold. If we some how resign all three of those players that will basically take up any cap room we have leaving us with only the MLE to make a move with.

I think the 76ers should use their MLE to sign Marshall. Marshall can shoot, we all know that, but he also is an underated defensive player and in his younger days he was able to block some shots. He is the type of player the 76ers need, a player who can play a role. Marshall could start at SF, or play backup PF.

    Free Agent Update

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"They've been quiet about it to this point, but King opened the door more than just a crack yesterday, confirming the names of several free agents - including forwards Stromile Swift, of Memphis, and Donyell Marshall, of Toronto - whom they have contacted through their respective agents and representatives since July 1."

"They've called about parameters, to show interest, to do the initial stuff," said Andy Miller, agent for Swift and Marshall. "It has not gone beyond that stage [with my clients]. They have three issues that will dictate where they go from there." The Sixers made their interest in Marshall, an excellent perimeter shooter, perfectly clear at the trade deadline during the season. King acknowledged at the time that their discussions with the Raptors were very serious. The Raptors, though, refused to budge."

"A partial list of their targets includes: Boston's Antoine Walker, Miami's Christian Laettner, Seattle's Vitaly Potapenko, and Indiana's Dale Davis, all unrestricted, plus Washington's Kwame Brown, who is restricted. But the Sixers' resources are limited: As a capped team, they have their midlevel exception, which is expected to be about $5 million. The hope, apparently, is to use that and a lower-level exception, probably worth more than $1.5 million, to add a couple of pieces on short-term deals.

"The Sixers have talked contract specifics with the agents for their three players, and King has vowed to match offers from elsewhere. They can match any offer for Dalembert and can match up to the league average - expected to be about $5 million - for Korver and Green."</div>

I think King is talking to the right players. Stromile is a player much like Dalembert who can come off the bench and produce but also struggles with consistency. Everyone here has been aware of the fact that Marshall would be a nice fit in Philadelphia, hopefully King can make are assumption into a reality because the 76ers are missing a player like Donyell Marshall. He can come off the bench and his most recognized asset has to be his ability to hit the outside shot. But what most people don't realize is that he is a very good defender, when he was younger he was a solid shot blocker; although he is not as good of one today he still has it in him. Antoine Walker would not be a bad choice either, a few seasons ago yes I wouldn't go near him within a 10-foot pole, but he has proved that he can do other things beside jack up three's. His game has matured and I think he is also another player who can hit big shots and play a role.

They are trying to get into the Stromile Swift lottery as a late entry right now he is already meeting with Houston and been sought after by many other teams. That article basically confirmed something all 76ers fans have known for a while. That the team is targeting Donyell Marshall he has really been the big name linked with the team all summer and unless he wants to be under the bright lights of Los Angeles. He will probably sign with the 76ers in the end. A couple names I did not like on that list for one is Brown we all always talk about how big a bust he was for a number one pick so why are so many teams looking to sign him, and give him another pay day? He will have no motivation to get better or be a good player after his latest payday and that's just how his career will go in my mind.

Also signing Walker might be bad in my opinion true you get a scorer who over the past years has learned to go inside a little more. However, he will still every now and then fall in love with the perimeter shot, and having another perimeter player on the team is not really a big need for us right now. Though I think of his name being mentioned just as the way I think of Swift?s we are trying to get in the running to sign these big name guys a couple days later than every other team. So it?s sort of like a race, and we got a late start.

Dale Davis I would really like to see in a 76ers uniform despite his age he is still a tough inside guy, and would give us some good rebounding and a presence inside. He would also be good in the mentor role for Samuel Dalembert if he returns to the team. Same thing with Laettner I see him in the same light he is not as tough inside, but his shot from big to short range is consistent and a mentor role would be something that would really help our young team.

Maybe the 76ers are looking at Brown just in case Dalembert gets away from them.

He just needs time to develop. You have to remember, he's still young right now and is still at the age of twenty three. Sure he was drafted way too high but that doesn't mean he can't be a solid player. Brown has the speed just like Dalembert, can play either forward or center, and has all the natural aspects needed to succeed. You say he doesn't have the motivation to be a good center- I would argue that he wasn't put in a position where he could succeed. Eddie Jordan hasn't really been utilizing a system where points are focused on the low post- instead he's focusing heavily on the guard/wing game of Arenas, Hughes, and Jamison. I don't follow the Wizards all that much, so correct me if I'm wrong.

With that said, I'm going to say that Marshall's ending up with the Sixers. He's expressed a lot of interest in the team over the season and there's actually substance to the rumors. Unlike in the cases of Swift, Walker, or Brown, he's actually come out and said that he wants to play/end his career in Philadelphia. He would be a great addition to that team with his three point skills as well as some much needed low post game. I just hope that there won't be a bidding war going on since I don't want us to overpay him all that much since he is aging and won't be able to bring much to the table three or four years later.
