I don't think race was a determining factor for the MVP outcome. However, I'm sure race played a role some of the voters choosing Nash over Shaq and vice versa. These are assumptions on my part and Dan Le Batard's part, and he nor I can prove race was an issue. Both players earned the award, and Nash is a deserving MVP.

I do question Le Batard's motives though. Just a few weeks prior to this article he was already crying about the fact Shaq would not win the MVP...

    Source

The reason he gives in this article probably factored in a lot more than race (if at all) did in the MVP voting.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Voters like to mix this stuff up, which is why Karl Malone once beat out Michael Jordan for the MVP award, why O'Neal has won only one of them and why I think Phoenix's Steve Nash will win it this year. Voters will be voting for Nash as a symbol, voting for the little guy, for the return of up-tempo basketball, for the point guard, for John Stockton, for assists, for unselfishness, for the most exciting team in the NBA.</div>

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">In other words, statistically, O'Neal is having his second-worst scoring season and his worst rebounding and free-throw season.</div>

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Hard to argue against Nash's value. Phoenix was 31-4, Nash missed five games, and the Suns were suddenly 31-9. They looked completely lost without him, the team's scoring average plummeting.</div>

More irony for this writer. He wrote an article criticizing Congress for turning the steroid investigation in baseball into a political tool.

    Link

This is about staging a show, not cleaning a mess.

I think he's doing the exact same thing to sell his name and the Miami Herald. It's fine to ask the question, but he should provide some solutions.

Dan Lebatard is a great writer, but this race thing was very stupid and even Dan knows it. Dan did this for the sake of writing an attention. Look I can understand supporting Shaq since he is covering a Miami sports team, but the race thing is so idiotic. Even Shaq would roll his eyes by reading that.

Dan did it to sell papers and get publicity for it. How sad?

While I don't actually agree with the race thing, though their could be some elements there, this is an interesting article.

    nope

There was rascism involved in my opinion. Sure there were probably a couple or people that took Nash's being white into acount but you dont think there was rascism against him too? Nowadays in the NBA there is discrimination against whites. I am sure there are writers that wanted to support shaq instead of nash because shaq is black. If the NBA didnt want the problem there should be an equal racial breakdown in the voters. More important than race Nash got votes because of the "underdog" factor, seeing as america loves an underdog.

OMG this is such a disgrace to steve nash. people are saying that he only won the award because he white?? Jesus. poor guy, when they asked him about this he said "i dont know what to say to that" and what are you supposed to say to that? basically it means you dont deserve the award. i think people are just mad because he won it. damn, you guys just cant accept that a small, white, CANADIAN point guard won the award can you.

There's an article that pretty much sums up my views on the entire subject. It's a Jason Whitlock piece, but its filled pretty much with quotes from Rex Chapman...

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">One man shouts racism in a crowded building and an unruly mob flogs him publicly. Le Batard didn't shout. He suggested that race might have combined with several other factors ? Nash's size, America's love for the underdog, Phoenix's 33-game turnaround, Phoenix's poor record without Nash, the voters' desire to avoid the obvious choice ? to hand Nash an award Shaq deserved.

Chapman, who is director of basketball operations for the Suns, agrees with me. Nash earned the MVP. His selection is not an injustice to Shaq. But it's foolish to dismiss Le Batard's assertions.

"I know [Le Batard]. I played in Miami for a year," said Chapman, a 12-year NBA vet and an All-American at Kentucky. "He's in Miami covering the Heat. They'll throw the 'homer' tag on him. Other journalists might say he just wants the shock value. I don't know Dan well enough to know what his motives are. But when I heard it, the first thing that went through my mind was, 'Damn right.'

"What mainly lends it credence, gives it some merit, is the MVP voting was close. You know, I grew up in a place (Owensboro, Ky.) where racism is an epidemic. I'm not talking about 20 years ago. I'm talking to this day. Drive through the South. But it's not just the South. [It's] other parts of this country, rural areas ? hell, in the cities. It doesn't take but just a handful [to swing the vote].

"It was silly to dismiss Le Batard's article as nonsense. Of course, race could have been a motivating factor in some people's vote."

Whether or not you want to admit it rascism is still a part of the American way of life. His being canadian has nothing to do with it. The fact is that he simply didnt deserve the award and one of the reasons he might have won it is the color of his skin. You wanna tell me that if there are as many black voters as there are white voters the vote isnt swayed towards shaq?

No way is this racist, Nash earned the MVP award and he deserved it. Going from lottery to first in the West over the Spurs, Kings, and Mavericks is no fluke, all just by adding two free agents and Nash was the one that had the most impact.

Nash didnt have that great of an impact to deserve the MVP. The suns added Q, and nash this offseason, but most importantly they got a healthy amare stoudamire back. And if Mike D'Antoni really is the best coach this year he deserves credit too.

it seems pretty common that on tv, the press or the net that the people most likely to jump up & say it isnt racism are whites who've hardly (if ever) had to deal with the issue, so of course its easier to just blow the thought off as if racism doesnt exist. i dont put anything past the NBA.

you've got clowns like Larry Bird going around saying there needs to be more white players and then you have David Stern who's trying to deny talent by attempting to eliminate under-20 players that 90% of the time happen to be black so that there is a better chance of creating more diversity with draft picks with the more even playing field. he's so worried about making the league a melting pot that he doesnt even care what happens to more talented players. the age limit probably wouldnt even be an issue if under-20 overseas players were being taken instead of the near guarantee of getting a black player if you're drafting a teen. and most importantly, there's currently a rule that allows ONLY players from OVERSEAS to declare for the draft at 17 years old as long as their 18 by draft date. this rule was made specifically to accomidate Darko Milicic. meanwhile you have god knows how many American & mostly black players who have been denied for being too young over the years. and then Stern goes around trying to pretend as if its to promote education and developing skill as if players are supposed to be able to do something with TWO years of college education and as if college guarantees that you'll come in as a top notch rookie. meanwhile, he doesnt promote any kind of education or development from his overseas prospects. he's just trying to offset some of the color little by little through a rule that affects mostly the color 'coincidently'. you have the Utah Jazz organization...need i say more. you have the houston rockets changing their whole look a few years back to accomidate Yao & the asian community with their designs & other things of that nature. Yao's probably gonna be an all star starter every year whether he deserves it or not simply because he's Chinese and the NBA continues to let the people of China put him in the lineup even though he's only been close to deserving it once. if every asian player in the league were on the ballots, i'd guarantee a very interesting starting lineup for the next all star game. racial issues exist. but back on the issue, for a league thats so hard pressed to create more diversity, i bet they didnt give a damn about having a diverse voting panel. they probably brought in their same ol power guys who just happen to be mostly white to do the voting. and if you consider that even a small amount of them have the same mindset as a Larry Bird, then they were probably estatic to see a white player who was anything near a viable candidate & voted for him regardless. i think Nash is a very good player, but im not gonna be naive about the situation when the NBA is already known for some shaky stuff.

OK....the heat just swept the wizards without Shaq. Is there any doubt in our minds now that Nash deserved the MVP and not shaq? Could you imagine what the mavs series would be like with out nash? LOL

So what if most of the players drafted from highschool are black? If they are so good, Im pretty sure they could get in to any college they want, and prove that they can play. Alot of times, the "great" highschool players are great simply because the competition isnt. They might face teams that are only half as good at playing basketball, and that allows them to increase their stats. By going to college the players can show if they have any work ethic at all, and they can show that they can handle a bit of competition. College also involves a bit more teamwork, as you might not be the only good player on the team.Stern wanting to raise the age limit is not racist at all, he's just looking out for the teams.

Rascism goes both ways, so why is this coming up when a white guy wins it? When was the last time a white guy won it? oh yeah 1986

No one ever brought up that only 4 white guys were on the all-star team and none of them were starters. They included Steve Nash( Beaten out by Bryant and Mcrady), Dirk Nowitzki(who was in the top 3 scorers), Manu Ginobli, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

They left off Brad Miller, Pau Gasol, Peja Stojakovic, and Andrei Kirilenko who led the league in blocks per game.

So if you want to make a big deal about MVP go ahead but you need to make a big deal about this to then

but the all star starters goes by fan voting and only nash deserved it anyway. Brad Miller didnt deserve it, pau didnt deserve it, peja didnt deserve and neither did Kirilenko (injured most of first half)
