<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">COLLEGE STATION ? Martellus Bennett signed a football scholarship with Texas A&M, but lately it seems that basketball has snared most of his attention. Bennett, a senior two-sport star from Alief Taylor High, has made himself eligible for the NBA Draft.

"He's more enamored with basketball than football now," Bennett's high school basketball coach, Jeff Durnford, said Tuesday. "He's always liked basketball more than football, but he always felt like football was where his bread was buttered."

Durnford said that Bennett, who averaged 23 points and eight rebounds per game for Taylor, told him this week that if he isn't an NBA first-round draft pick, he'll attend A&M and play both sports, at least in the beginning. Bennett (6-7, 247 pounds) is considered a long shot even to be selected over the draft's two rounds. </div>

    As Kicksdaddy would say "WHO?"

This Tony Gonzalez wannabe should save everyone the trouble and stick to football, where he was the #1 prospect in 2005

I saw Bennett play here against Katy High a few times...he's from the same school distict as Rashard Lewis but Bennett was not nearly as dominant...He's raw and is around 6'8", has no real jump shot, and only scored close in...he blocked a few shots of course but he was playing against an undersized school...I'm kind of shocked because he is nowhere near NBA-ready, and I actually think he'll find college basketball rough...

I did a little browsing on Rivals.Com and noticed that for football, Martellus Bennett is the #8 overall player in the nation, #1 tight end in the nation, and #1 player in the state of Texas. However, Bennett is not ranked as one of their top 150 high school basketball seniors. Obviously, this kid is surrounded by the wrong people. Who would advise throwing away a potentially great NFL career for a chance at a summer league invite in the NBA?

^Agreed. I had the opportunity to guard him my senior year on varsity at Katy High when he was a junior. Mind you that I'm a mere 6'1' and at the time was 185 of pure muscle and could handle him just as easy as any other post I played against that year. He needs to stick to college ball before even worrying about the draft at this point. He's still far from draft ready, he wouldn't even go late second round right now.
*edit* Forgot to mention I played post all of high school, it wasn't just a few plays that I guarded him, rather two district games worth.

I think this kid beleives it's easier than it is to get in the NBA. If he finds it so easy tell him to give me a call and I'll give him 7 years of nightmares and frustration and he can ask my 2 kids how much fun it is to be constantly moving while daddy chases a dream he thought wouldnt be "quite" this hard. And I was ranked WAY higher than this kid coming out of HS. We're talking credits and a few votes shy of golden arches, and this kid couldn't even sniff Grimace's dirty drawers!

Martellus Bennet is not even close to being at the level, that is required to make the jump from HS to the NBA. I fully expect him to withdraw from the NBA draft before the deadline and retain his college eligibility. Martellus is one hell of an athlete - however like Shooter and Superman said he is not NBA ready. After seeing him play this year, I thought he would struggle even in college. He has all the athleticism in the world however the only reason he was able to put up his stats is because him and Fendi Onubun(committed to Arizona) took every single shot for Alief Taylor this past year. He got a lot of favorable calls this year from the refs which helped him pad his decieving stats.

I don't see what he is thinking about in declaring. He must be hearing stuff from pro scouts about his potential but I have to ask what potential are they looking at in him NBA wise. He is a far greater player in football than in basketball.

He isn't even the top player in Houston that I saw this past year...

Couldn't have said it any better. I do know this though, if he manages to somehow someway make an NBA roster this summer, expect to see me declare eligible next year. I mean if I can hold him and he's got 8 or so inches on me, I'm definitely ready to go pro haha.

Well he did get significantly better this year than he was his junior or sophmore year. Did you see him play any this year?

I did, my best friends are Shooter and his little brother. Shooter's little brother was starting point for KHS and captain of the team so I came back to watch some of his games and happened to see Martellus a few times. I still believe I could match-up against him and hold him, and that he shouldn't have even bothered pondering the idea of declaring eligible. He's good, but no where near that good. Like Shooter and others have said, I think this kid will struggle with college ball. He needs to stick to his football career.
