I was just wondering.. u know how you're allowed to shoot a freethrow jumping as long as your feet doesn't touch the line when you land? So what happens if someone gets a head start running, jump from beyond the FT line and dunk it on a free throw attempt? Is that legal?

Thats an abusrd idea, but I could imagine how funny it would be if someone tried it for one point, and do it again for the other. But to answer your quesion, I'm pretty sure that you can't do that.

"Technically" wouldn't you land inside the free throw line and therefore its illegal?

No, you could actually do this before. Wilt Chamberlain used to shoot 90% from the line when this was allowed because he'd do dunks or layups as free throws, but you have to land infront of the line, and on a layup or dunk, you'll land beyond the line.

But when u dunk, hasn't the ball technically "hit the rim" and so the FT shooter is allowed to move in and cross the line (and hence, you can land beyond the FT line)?

You can't pass the FT line while the ball is in your hands...

MAN how tiring would it be to make 20 free throw line dunks a game...

and you could possibly get the 10 second violations if you took too long to gather yourself and go for it.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting og15:</div><div class="quote_post">You can't pass the FT line while the ball is in your hands...</div>

So can you run towards the line and throw the ball at the rim and release before the FT-line and then alley oop slam it? OOOOH that would be amazing!!

No because the shooter can only advance after the ball hits the rim, so if it hits the backboard, you wouldn't be able to do that. Also the other players can move into the lane after the release, so if you did that, you'd run into traffic after you released the ball.

Suffice it to say: You must be a horrible shooter if you need to do that for your free thows.

Why doesn't anyone jump when they take free throws? Just wondering... Some players are better jumpshooters than they are free throw shooters so could you technically take a jumpshot at the freethrow line?

Plus they probably are afraid they might jump over the line or something. I used to jump for free throws when I was like ten and I have to say I jumped over the line so many times.

No you can jump but it would look pretty embarrasing. Some people would think you aren't strong enough to hit rim without jumping. [IMG]

Nevermind I found a website in NBA.com that shows you the rules...

Apparently when you're shooting a FT, you can't stand behind the FT line further than 4 feet, so you won't be able to get a head start running anyways to do the FT dunk.. but man I wish I could've seen Wilt do the FT dunk over and over again lol
