Jack Rust grew up an Oregon Ducks fan, and walked on with the football team when he arrived at the University of Oregon in 1965. A year later, he was a starter on the defensive line, a stalwart in the trenches for the Ducks from the end of Oregon football's era at Hayward Field and the early days of Autzen Stadium, a defensive captain, and a coach's favorite beyond just his constant supply of deer jerky he used to bribe Len Casanova and Jerry Frei for playing time.
