GARLAND, Texas — Two suspects were killed after they opened fire Sunday in a parking lot outside a provocative contest for cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, authorities said.

Garland's city government issued a statement saying that as a Muhammad Art Exhibit event was coming to a close at the Curtis Culwell Center, "two males drove up to the front of the building in a car'' and started shooting at a security officer.

"Garland police officers engaged the gunmen, who were both shot and killed,'' the statement posted online said.

    .....

A group called the American Freedom Defense Initiative hosted the Muhammad Cartoon Exhibit and $10,000 cartoon contest.

The arena, owned by the Garland school district, hosted a "Stand With the Prophet" event in January,.

The cartoon exhibit featured "images of Islam's prophet, both historic and contemporary, and speeches by leading voices of freedom and internationally renowned free speech advocates," according to a press release by the group.

Such drawings are deemed insulting to many followers of Islam and have sparked violence around the world. According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad — even a respectful one — is considered blasphemous.

    ....

Pamela Geller, president of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, said that she planned the Sunday event to make a stand for free speech in response to the outcries and violence over drawings of Muhammad, NBC News reported. Geller's group is known for mounting a campaign against the building of an Islamic center blocks from the World Trade Center site and for buying advertising space in cities across the U.S. criticizing Islam.

"This is a war,'' she posted on her website PamellaGeller.com. "This is war on free speech. What are we going to do? Are we going to surrender to these monsters?''

Dutch politician Geert Wilders, known for advocating a ban on the Kuran, was a keynote speaker at the event.

im sure a flag burning contest or a "sculpt jesus out of feces" convention would meet the same free speech support down there.

I enjoyed how it's a Freedom of Religion group but the keynote speaker wants to ban the Koran.

You are free to speak your crap, no question, even sculpt Jesus out of feces. But you will not find where is says, you do not have to pay for it.

2 muslims attempted to murder a stranger who was being paid minimum wage to guard a cartoon contest, and somehow the media's entire focus is on the "motives" behind the cartoon contest?

I personally would meet all of those acts with the same free speech support. I think all are idiotic but all should be legal. But the big point is, if there was a flag burning contest or sculpt Jesus out of feces convention (sermon on the mountain of poo), do you think there would have been the same likelyhood of anti-contest/convention people to drive by and shoot at the guards or attendees?

Stupid people support all sorts of crazy ideas and shout from their soap boxes. This is nothing new, but their protection is fundamental to a strong, open and free society. But shooting at those idiots is unacceptable and it pleases me that they were killed.

    Quite possibly yeah.

They got what they deserved no doubt though. Just think its funny that the christian "religious free speech" crowd is often against that very thing.

Hypocrisy by that crowd is nothing new. But they aren't real free speech supporters unless they support the rights of those they vehemently disagree with. But people use good ideas as cover for wrong thinking all the time.

Ha! The image is clear. Might be fun to watch. Grainiac biulds and image of Jesus for public display in Beaumont Texas. Texan take offence to the artwork and the tort. Punches Grainiac in mouth.
Where by he shoots Texan. Grainiac explains to Texas cop, he is just holding his ground because he has a right to render Jesus as a pile of shit(feces).
    Now the show begins.
