Video is in the link. It looks similar to Gray Maynard-Rob Emerson, when Gray Maynard managed to knock himself during a takedown with Emerson putting him into a guillotine. http://www.ketv.com/cnn-news/19578023/detail.html According to local news reports, the 20-year-old Kirk has some use of his arms after doctors replaced his fifth vertebrae with bone from his hip during a recent surgery. Doctors are unsure if he'll ever be able to walk again.
Found the gif, Maynard-Emerson wasn't actually a guillotine, but either way Maynard KO'ed himself, which is a pretty rare feat in mma. It also happened in TUF 9, with another American wrestler, who KO'ed himself, and then proceeded to be Kimura'ed while unconscious and then the ref stopped it. Don't have a gif for that one though.
damn that really sucks for that kid, the sad part if that he'll inevitably be used as some sort of symbol of how dangerous this sport is by some politician and Dana White will probably end up on some interview saying "This sport is fucking safe, the problem is no name organizations putting in fighters that don't know what theyre doing" He'll probably use more F-bombs. Hope he recovers though, the movement in his arms is a good sign.
lol, Dana will do what he always does when asked about it. He'll say his favourite line "I bet there have been more serious injuries in badminton." He'll bring up that there are like 8 deaths per year in boxing around the world. He'll bring up that there have been 40+ cheerleading deaths in the last 20 years. Or some obscure fact like: "there were thirteen deaths to high school pole vaulters between 1982 and 1997." or " since 1990 there is a "positive trend" toward only single digit annual deaths as if it is an accepted risk in football."
Unfortunate, good luck to him. MMA is dangerous, there is no denying that. But not so dangerous that it should be singled out. Dana can talk about badminton deaths but the number of badminton players and badminton games exceeds the number of MMA fighters and fights by a factor of what, 1000? 10,000? That's just Dana stacking the deck by using totals and not per-capita numbers.
Yep, MMA is pretty much in a category of dangerousness as other combat sports and then football is at a lower level. Badminton obviously doesn't compare, even with frequency being taken into account.
That is really sad. Hopefully the kid makes a full recovery, or close to it. The vultures are going to run wild with this.
There's been a lot of advances in modern medicine to reverse the effects of being in temporary paralysis. He has youth on his side and in good shape so hopefully he'll be able to walk again.
