Ok, I've gotten over the defeat against the Wizards, so I figured I start this thread now. This offseason, the Bulls will be looking to improve on a great year. Feel free to do this yourself, using this template if you would like: A. Resigning Players B. Free Agents C. Coaching Situation D. Draft (if applicable) E. Trades (don't go overboard) F. Player Development G. Depth Chart H. Everything Else A. Resigning Players The following people are what I list as the Chicago Bulls core. Tyson Chandler Eddy Curry Luol Deng Ben Gordon Kirk Hinrich Andres Nocioni Chris Duhon* * - Denotes replaceable player The following are this years FA's (Whom are worth keeping): Othella Harrington Tyson Chandler Eddy Curry Chris Duhon Jannero Pargo <u>The Contracts</u><font size="1"> ( I don't know many details about the new CBA, so due to the lack of knowledge I have in that, I may be wrong with something )</font> Tyson Chandler - His stock may have fallen a tad due to his poor playoff performance, however he still is a talented bigman and a great difference maker on our team. He'll probably get quite a few offers from other teams, so we should play it safe and play him pretty handsomely. 38 million over 6 years, starting at around 6 million. Status: Resigned Eddy Curry - His stock possibly fell, or this might just be a precaution. Either a) have Eddy sign the Qualifying offer or sign him to a 61 million dollar 7 year contract. It would likely start around 8 million or so. Status: Resigned Chris Duhon - He could be retained with the LLE. If he asks for more, we don't need him. Status: Possibly Resigned Jannerro Pargo - Same goes as above, and quite possibly a bit more than the minimum. If he asks for much more, buh-bye. Status: Possibly Resigned Othella Harrington - We might be able to sign him back up with the LLE or a smaller contract, but I have other plans to replace him. Status: Not Resigned B. Free Agents Guys who the Bulls should look at Donyell Marshall Shareef Abdur-Rahim Donyell Marshall has expressed the Bulls as a possible destination for him to play next year. He was signed with the MLE a few years back, and we might as well do it again. He remains living in Chi-town and would be the perfect fit as the starting PF who can shoot the lights out, muscle it inside on occasion, and is a tough rebounder. A big upgrade over Othella. Abdur-Rahim may be a bit harder to get, but may be fed up with being on losing teams and take a paycut. He'd be our starting 4 and play some time at the 3, getting around 27-32 minutes a game. Could give us 15 pts and 6-7 rebounds in that time. Big upgrade over Othella. I would choose Donyell Marshall, with the simple fact that he can stretch the defense the most and has playoff experience. C. Coaching Situation Plainly resign Skiles. He's done a great job with this team, and he fits this team like a glove. D. Draft N/A E. Trades (don't go overboard) I actually wouldn't make any major moves, but moving Piatkowski for a second rounder or something like that may work. I don't think there will be any trades unless it is a S&T, which I also doubt. F. Player Development Ben Gordon - PASSING! I can't stress that enough. 90% Of his turnovers are because of dumb passes. The other 10% is lazy sloppy ballhandling and other. Also, Skiles needs to teach this kid how to execute a screen and roll. Our screen and roll is pretty disgusting to say the least. A Marshall/Gordon screen and roll would be hella dangerous if executed correctly. Tyson Chandler - A whole lot of things. The 15 foot jumper needs work. That little hook move he has, believe it or not, has potential to be a good consistent move. He needs to work at it though. He also needs to hit the weights and get stronger. We need him to stuff the ball into the basket when in traffic. Kirk Hinrich - Shooting. Yes, shooting. He's been inconsistent about it all year long. He's gone in streaks of games which you knew if he was gonna shoot good or bad depending on the then streak. Once he becomes a consistent shooter, wow, our backcourt will have a whole lot of firepower. Luol Deng - Lateral speed, muscle, ballhandling. Expect him to get some time at the 2 next year. Once he works on all the things I just mentioned, he will have all the tools to guard 2's and be servicable in the time he spends playing the 2. Eddy Curry - Defense and rebounding. He has improved these things over the years. He isnt the worst defensive player ever, but he should be one of the best at it and rebounding with the skills he has. Andres Nocioni - Ball handling, three point shot. He is a roller coaster who gets you nervous when he dribbles. He takes threes on occasion and will surprise you once in a while, but if he could expand on his range that would help our interior guys out and space the floor out better. G. Depth Chart C- Eddy Curry / Antonio Davis / Tyson Chandler PF- Donyell Marshall / Tyson Chandler / SF- Luol Deng / Andres Nocioni SG- Ben Gordon / Luol Deng / Jannero Pargo or Duhon PG- Kirk Hinrich / Jannero Pargo or Duhon Minutes C- (30) / (12) / (6) PF- (24) / (24) SF- (20) / (28) SG- (32) / (10) / (6) PG- (30) / (18) Fairly distributed minutes. These are the moves I feel the team should make. Thoughts?
Players under contract - Antonio Davis, Kirk Hinrich, Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, Andres Nocioni & Eric Piatkowski. A. Players to resign. Curry and Chandler are definates. Duhon if he doesnt ask for something outrageous Pargo, same as Duhon. I can see a team forking out more then we are willing to spend on Pargo, he has had some good offensive games and Game 5 put his name on the map. Harrington - depends on how much he asks for, but he was good for us this year. B. Free Agents. Bobby Simmons (Clippers, i think he is a Free Agent) Donyell Marshall (Raptors) Marshall is probably one of the most under-rated players in the NBA, I would love to have him back. Simmons - won most improved player averaging 16 ppg on 46% shooting, 43% 3pt shooter, 6 boards per game) he will probably get resigned, we are a little thin at Shooting Gaurd, especially if we dont sign Duhon (meaning Kirk will play Point and Gordon(?) as SG) I am not sold on Gordon as a starter yet. Sign another cheap player who can play both Center and Forward. C. Coaching If we dont resign Skiles I will start following the Clippers and hunt down Reinsdorf for being a tight a$$. D. Draft We dont have any picks, and of the roster i dont want to trade anyone for a pick. E. Trades Not good at this part. F. Players Didnt see enough of the Bulls to know who needs what. G. Depth Chart. hopefully Curry and Chandler can start now. - ( ) means free agent signing C - CurryDavis F - ChandlerHarrington or (Marshall) F - DengNocioni G - (Simmons)GordonPiatkowski G - HinrichDuhonPargo *sign another player who can play both C/F H. 2005/2006 Season Prediction 2nd in the conference behind Detriot. We challenge them all season but just fall short for 1st place by 2 or 3 games. 49 wins Home Court again.
^ With those changes, we could win 50+ games. Simmons and Marshall, that's sick. I'm not exactly sure if we have enough money for both of them though. That would be very nice though. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">*sign another player who can play both C/F</div> Fabricio Oberto, former teamate of Andres Nocioni should be looked at. And i'm saying this with some validity - I read that Paxson could be signing him this offseason.
I was more leaning to either Simmons or Marshall with a strong preference to Simmons. I would also like money to keep Hinrich, Deng, Nocioni and Gordon when they are FA down the track. We are paying Eddie Robinson $5 million in the up coming season and Antonio Davis $13 million in his last season under contract. $18 million should pay for 2 or 3 of those players.
^ But i think even Simmons is more than a 2 game improvement. We lost the first 9 games because we were a bad team. We started getting the jist of it around 20 odd games into the season. I think that we could win more than 50 because the players we have continue to get better, while we add a quality swingman in the process. Sounds good to me. We have bird rights on Deng, Gordon, and Hinrich, the only one that scares me is Nocioini leaving. He won't be an RFA and we wont have any Bird Rights on him. I'm sure he wants to come back to Chicago, but he probably also wants to get a pretty good contract.
he has another 2 years to prove he deserves a big contract. I am scared that Curry and/or Chandler will flop once they get paid and we drop to a mediorce team again
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">he has another 2 years to prove he deserves a big contract.</div> I didn't mean an overly large contract, just one maybe 3-5 million. MLE perhaps. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">I am scared that Curry and/or Chandler will flop once they get paid and we drop to a mediorce team again</div> I doubt that. Eddy Could have easily still gotten a big contract in the shape he was in already with a different team(like the Hawks), but he worked his ass off and got into great shape. Tyson has always been a hard worker and he brings too much intensity for me to doubt that he isn't for real.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">1 - CORE VALUES: As Paxson has said repeatedly, his main mission is to keep the Bulls' core of young players together for at least another season. That means re-signing restricted free agents Chandler, Eddy Curry and Chris Duhon to new deals. Although the players will be free to negotiate with other teams beginning July 1, the Bulls have the right to match any offer, and Paxson -- perhaps to discourage other teams from making a run at any of his players -- has said he will match any offer. All three players have said they want to return, so it's just a matter of finding a salary figure that's satisfactory to everyone. ''I just have to see how it plays out,'' Chandler said. ''It's tough going into the summer because you kind of feel like you're on the outside, but they've done a great job of making me feel like this still is my place. I just have to let the offseason unfold. I wouldn't ask for any other teammates. I love all the guys here.'' 2 - SHOW HIM THE MONEY: Skiles isn't a free agent -- the Bulls hold an option for next season -- but he's also likely to be rewarded with a big-money, long-term contract this summer. ''Honestly, I haven't given it a lot of thought other than I'll take some time away from it, and I will decide what's right for me,'' Skiles said of his contract situation. ''We'll see after that.'' Even if Skiles hasn't given his future much thought (doubtful), Paxson has. ''I've already spoken to Scott about it,'' he said. ''It's going to come down, obviously, to us seeing things the same way. I want him here, and I've made that clear to him. I think he's one of the best coaches in the league. We have an option year on him, and I'm already to the point where I want to rip that option year up. I've offered that to him, and we're going to go from there. ''That's as important as signing any player. Scott's a very good coach, and he's a huge reason why we've done so well this year.'' Again, settling on a number will be the key. While Skiles is toward the bottom of NBA coaches in salary, the elite coaches earn in the neighborhood of $5 million per year -- more than double what Skiles would earn next season under the option -- and Phil Jackson is believed to be seeking $10 million a year to return to coaching. ''Scott wants what's fair for him, and that's logical,'' Paxson said. ''He's done an unbelievable job. I'm confident it'll happen.'' If the Bulls and Skiles can't come to an agreement, Skiles could simply coach next season under the option year and become a free agent after the season. If the Bulls have another solid season, he could be in high demand. 3 - HUNGER PANGS: Now that the Bulls' young players have gotten a taste of the playoffs and what it takes to be successful, it'll motivate them to get in the gym this summer to improve so they can take the next step. ''You hope that that's what it does, especially a team with a lot of rookies,'' Skiles said. ''Not only the playoffs, but the season as well. I mean, how do you explain to a guy what it takes to guard a certain player in the league in a pressure situation until they do it, or what it takes to get a basket in a big moment. ''You hope that that's what motivates guys in the summer. They get a taste of it, they want more of it and they want to keep moving forward.'' Said Hinrich: ''We feel like we have something to work with and everybody's going to take the summer, try to get better and come back and see what happens.'' 4 - ADDITION BY STAYING PUT: With no picks in the June draft and no desire to mess with the team's chemistry, Paxson plans to make only minor changes to the roster in the offseason. ''I have to look long term, and if I have to think three years out, this nucleus of young players is pretty good,'' Paxson said. ''Obviously, you're always trying to tinker with your roster and you're trying to find people that can help you out, but the core of this team is going to be the same.'' Of course, that won't mean there won't be a move or two. The Bulls will have the mid-level exception and the $1 million exception to sign veteran free agents. Paxson also has to decide whether to re-sign veteran unrestricted free agents Adrian Griffin and Othella Harrington. ''We can use a big that can shoot the ball from distance,'' Paxson said. ''We can use a bigger guard who can defend, and that's not taking anything away from Kirk and Chris, but we do have a small backcourt. And we can use a little more athleticism anywhere along our roster.'' 5 - WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR: No not next season. Next offseason. Since Paxson took over two years ago, a big part of his plan has been getting the Bulls in position to be able to sign a major free agent in the summer of 2006. He's on track -- so long as he doesn't make any bold moves this summer. ''Right now, we can re-sign Eddy, Tyson, Chris, our restricted guys, and be in really good shape in '06 to maybe pursue some free agents,'' Paxson said. ''I have to think that way. If I think there's a player out there this offseason that makes sense, that makes us better, we'll certainly go ahead and pursue it. ''We have a lot of things going for us right now. Chicago is a great place to play. All of a sudden, we're back on the map, and we have a young team that's exciting. People like the way we play; players like the way we play.''</div> Source
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Bulls will be conservative in free agency because they don?t want to consume the cap room they can clear next summer. Even after Curry and Chandler are re-signed, the Bulls should have at least $10 million to spend on free agents in 2006. ?We can use a big who can shoot the ball from a distance,? Paxson said. ?We can use a bigger guard who can defend. That?s not taking anything away from Kirk and Chris, but we do have a small backcourt. And we could use a little more athleticism on our roster.? There aren?t many obvious targets to fill Paxson?s wish list. Donyell Marshall, a sweet-shooting big man, figures to get better offers than what the Bulls will be willing to spend. Utah?s Raja Bell is a possibility for a taller guard. One name worth considering is one who just burned the Bulls in the playoffs ? power forward Michael Ruffin. The former Bulls draft pick is an unrestricted free agent and might be worth an investment, even though he?s not a scorer. The Bulls need inside depth, especially since next season may be Antonio Davis? last. Washington has already given Brendan Haywood and Etan Thomas long-term contracts, and they will have to pay up this summer to keep guard Larry Hughes, so Ruffin could be a low priority for the Wizards. Paxson doesn?t expect to look overseas for new players, as he did last year with Andres Nocioini. ?I don?t know if there?s a guy over there right now we would take a chance on,? he said. ?I don?t want to go out and look for maybe a short-term quick fix that may make us a hair better when I think our young core in two, three, four years, could be one of the best teams in the league. I have to be patient with it.?</div> Source Paxson has announced what the team will be looking for in the off-season.
I truly think that the Bulls need to add experience in the off-season. Along with the current roster they have now the Bulls have proved that they are a team capable of making the playoffs. But one thing they need, that definitely showed in their last game is a player who can lead a team in the locker room and has playoff experience.
First and foremost, resigning. We absolutely need to resign both Chandler and Curry back. We should be able to get each of them for a fairly good deal, as neither of them are worth too an outrageous amount. Unfortunately, due to the lack of quality big men, and the fact we have two of them up for free agency, we might have to shell out a little more then what we want to. Nonetheless though, they are the top priorities for the upcoming offseason. No doubt about it. In concerns to Duhon, he's not an absolute necessity. I personally believe they'll let him go. If we keep him, there isn't necessarily a spot on the roster for him. I think Ben is set to be the starting shooting guard next year after his phenomenal rookie season. And to me, it's quite apparent that Kirk Hinrich is this teams point guard and is going to be much better then Duhon, especially offensively, in the long run. I think he's the one player that we can let go unless we find it an absolute necessity to bring him back. As far as free agents go, I say they should attempt to use their MLE on Donyell Marshall. Seeing as how he's probably itching for a ring and likely wants to get out of Toronto, I think he'd be a great pickup. He can stretch the defense and he's a decent defender. He would add another viable scoring option to Chicago's lineup and would give them another veteran leader. However, don't shoot too high on him. We want to make sure by signing him that his contract wouldn't interfere with resigning Hinrich, Deng, and Gordon here in a few years. So, in other words, no long term deals and don't overpay him. Just because he's a good big man, doesn't mean he needs a $70mil contract for 5 years or something like that. If he asks for too much more then the MLE, let him walk. He won't be an absolute necessity with Chandler, Davis, Curry, and maybe Harrington manning the frontcourt of Chicago. Plus, throw in Deng and Noc, he could also be hardpressed to find minutes at the SF. So, granted that he would be a nice addition because of his shooting and decent defense, he's not an absolute necessity. I just preach that they don't overpay him if they do get him or want him bad enough. And concerning Abdur Rahim, no, don't even think about it. He's not going to take an MLE. He's likely going to want a nice beefy contract that's worth about $6-$8 mil per year, and probably a good 4 or 5 years. So, that could mess up resigning Hinrich, Gordon, and Deng. I say, let someone else overpay him. I will say that he's good, he's going to give you anywhere from 15-20 ppg and 8-10 rpg, but he's not worth a $40mil investment for 5 years. With trading, I wouldn't pull the trigger on any trade myself. If they propose a trade to anyone, it's very likely, depending on the trade, that the other team will want either Curry or Chandler in return, and neither of them are worth losing at this point if you ask me. They're too young and too good to give up. So to me, trades are a no go. The only thing I might consider is a sign and trade with Duhon for either a late first or second round pick. That's about the only thing I might contemplate at this point. As far as development goes....Ben Gordon, work on the passing and defense. Too many times this year he's thrown a careless pass that caused a turnover. He's got the potential to be a good passing guard, he just has to make better decisions, and that will come with time and experience. Defense on the other hand, is much tougher. Since he plays SG, he goes against bigger guys. And seeing as how he's only a generous 6'3", he's giving up a lot of size there. But nonetheless, he's more then quick enough to be able to stay with his man and play some pesky defense, as long as he puts his mind to it. All in all, we need him to be more then a scorer, especially if we let Duhon go. For Deng, laterlal quickness and ball handling are his main flaws. He's not the quickest guy in the world, but he's still got decent speed. He's got to be able to stay with his man and not let him blow by. The ball handling, not sure what he can do about that. Also, get some consistency on the long ball. If he could improve his outside shot, he'd give us yet another tool to stretch the defense with and get our bigs easier shots in the paint. For Curry, defense and rebounding. His defense has improved, but it's still inconsistent, and his rebounding is absolutely horrendus. He needs to learn how to box out and get to the boards. Use that leaping ability, size, and strength to his advantage so he can get the boards. He's an atrocious rebounder for a big, and if he worked on that, along with his man defense, he could definitely be on of the best centers in the East. Chandler, simply get some more offense. Add a nice little mid range jumper to the game so he can score easier. Since he's not the strongest guy in the world, it's tough for him to post a guy up, but if he added a mid range shot to his game, he'd be a lot better off. Also, learn how to use his quickness and athelticism to his advantage on the offensive end against the slower 4s and 5s in the East. With coaching, it's simple. Resign Skiles long term. That's all they have to do. Nothing special there. Give the man the contract he deserves and don't let him slip away. All in all, if management can get these moves done and the players can work on the parts of their game that is weaker, the Bulls could be better then they were this year. The team is talent laden and they have all the potential in the world. Imagine if Skiles could get this much out of a team full of rookies, think of what he could do once the rookies and the rest of the young guys had another year to gain some more experience. The Bulls could be a force to be reckoned with. If they manage to at least bring back Curry and Chandler, watch out next year for them.
The bulls would never consider signing Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Never, ever ever. Donyell is a possibility. What we have to do now is resign Eddy Curry (if we can) Tyson Chandler, Chris Duhon, Adrian Griffin, and maybe Othella Harrington. What do we pay Tyson I think we have to ask ourselves before worrying about Curry. There are a lot of ridiculous salaries in the NBA. I think we can all agree that Tyson is better than Tim Thomas, Raef LaFrentz, and a bunch others. Check http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries.htm for the salaries of every team. Tyson I think we should offer him maybe a six, seven year deal maybe 60-70 mil. Chris Duhon should probably get at least 2-3 million a year and we should sign him to a 3 year contract or longer. Eddy, I can't comment on him, but now he is definitely a liability. He is probably the third best or second best center in the east. With that said what should we pay him? Now who should we sign to help out our team? If Eddy can't come back I strongly urge John Paxson to look at Zydrunas Illgauskas. If Eddy can come back, I think we should look at acquiring Jerome James of Seattle. Look at him in the playoffs, he's a monster. He's huge 7-1 270. Can block shots, rebound and get dirty in the paint. I think his 3.0 rpg during the season is a bit misleading. He started 80 games for the sonics and is getting great playoff experience. Another Center/back up we should also look at is Samuel Dalembert (restricted) of the 76ers. Strong rebounder, good defense, can block shots and score in the paint. Shot 52% this season. 8.2ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.68blkpg At Powerforward I think the bulls should take a look at Stromile Swift. Very strong and super athletic. Would be great backing up Tyson. can block shots and score quick and grab rebounds. Guards: From what it seems, Paxson is semi interested in Bobby Jackson. This might sound retarded but I'd like us to pick up Kerry Kittles, Eddie Jones, or Micahel Curry. Very defensive minded guys who can guard the big guys and if we want to go with the three guard line up of gordon, hinrich, duhon. We can stick them at the pf and have tyson at center. The Team: 1. Kirk Hinrich, is the best player on this team and is a true leader. Can score, controls the team like no other, can pass, can play great defense. I think Kirk will win defensive player of the year sometime and call me crazy but I even think he might be MVP one year after watching Nash win it this year. Projected stats: 16ppg, 7apg, 4rpg, 1.7spg. 2. Eddy Curry, it's not that he's the second best player, but he always seems to make his presence known early in games and establishs scoring early. I think Eddy will begin averaging 20ppg soon. I think he'll be back next year and average 18ppg, 6rpg, 1bpg 3. Ben Gordon. Six man of the year. I don't know about him honestly. I hope he starts playing D and learns to pass the ball better, control his ball movement. He has a lot of growing to do still. I just hope he doesn't become the next Dell Curry. 4. Luol Deng, Yes, I am putting him in front of Tyson. Why? Because I believe Loul Deng might just be the next super star of this team. I heard earlier this season him being compared to Jamal Mashburn. Now if he can just develope a better three than that's great. He's good on defense, better than Mashburn. I just hope he's not as injured. 5. Tyson Chandler, I really hope he's starting next year. I think Tyson is capable of averaging over 12 rebouns a game, 2 blocks and 10 or so points a game. He lead the team in foul attempts, thus he must improve his freethrow shooting. He must develope something in the low post besides looking totally awkward.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting BBall Guru:</div><div class="quote_post">Are you kidding me? </div> I don't see what I could be kidding about. Ben Gordon will be the starter next year after the season he just had. And, you don't use a #9 overall pick on Hinrich only to not start him. He's better then Duhon. He's just as good a passer. He's a great leader. He knows the offense. Good defender. And, above all else, he's a MUCH better shooter than Duhon (though very streaky). So no, I'm not kidding about anything. I wouldn't be surprised to NOT see Duhon back in Chicago next year.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting BBall Guru:</div><div class="quote_post"> Tyson I think we should offer him maybe a six, seven year deal maybe 60-70 mil. No way is he worth that. That's the size of Odom's contract, and he's not even close to that level yet. Plus, that WILL mess up trying to resign the rest of our youth in 3 and 4 years. If he wants that much, let someone else overpay him. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Now who should we sign to help out our team? He's good, young, and athletic. And again, bring him in, it may hinder bringing back our young guys in a few years. All in all, none of these moves would really help Chicago. Their main concerns are and should be bringing back their two young bigs. The second one after that should be bringing in someone like Donyell who can play defense and stretch the defense on the other end. Other then that, bringing in Dalembert makes no sense. Bringing in Swift also makes no sense. And, paying Tyson that much would make Chicago look dumb. No GM in the right mind will give him that much. He's good, but he's not worth that much money. He doesn't do enough yet to bar $10 mil per year.
Well, Pax was on 670 today and he said that he doesn't plan to make any big moves like signing Marshall. He may be a too big of a chunk out of our checkbook. We'll probably acquire a bigger defensive SG and a PF/C for a smaller contract. Sounds good to me, it can't mess up our chemistry since the moves aren't too major. Still would like to see 'Yell in a Bulls jersey again though.

Not to take anything away from Duhon but Hinrich and Gordon are just better players for the Bulls at this point. I am sure Duhon will be back if he is willing to take a low contract maybe even the MLE, but if I am the Bulls and a team offers him over the MLE, I'll let him walk. And if a team does pay him that much, I would wish Duhon good luck with his new team.
