Plenty of All Blacks are continuing to flood the French top flight. Dan Carter likely being the most important players on the move. It was a big surprise he decided to move to Perpignan considering that better offers came in from Biarritz, Paris and Toulouse. In any case, he should be a top player for the club. I like Biarritz's new signings, going with more youth then veterans. Stealing those two Toulouse youth players was also a big plus! They also signed another American, Thretton Palamo. Takudzwa Ngwenya played fairly well for them, so I think signing American players is no longer just a risk to bigger league clubs. Toulouse re-signed Frédéric Michalak and also brought in Toulouse native David Skrela. I will never like Skrela and obviously I don't think he'll fit in with Byron Kelleher among other greats. He just makes too many mistakes. Michalak on the other hand will be right back in the mix, likely locking a permanent place within a few matches. Toulon have fallen apart just as they reached the next level. I expect them to head right back down to Rugby Pro D2 along with either Brive, Dax or Montpellier. I expect the other newly promoted club Mont-de-Marsan to do fairly well. Likely placing somewhere between ninth and twelfth place in the standings by season end. Thanks for the update! Now does this mean that Carter has left the Crusaders, or do the seasons not overlap (and does his contract allow him to do both; I wouldn't think so). Any idea what the average salary is in USD?
Dan Carter has left the Crusaders because they can't offer him the kind of cash the French clubs can. French clubs are the most powerful financially in rugby. That's why I suggest getting to know them! Due to his move he also won't be playing for the All Blacks except for big tournaments. I believe he is going to be paid around €560,000 p.y, which would be roughly around $824,800 p.y. That's pretty good in rugby. He will be one of the highest paid players.
I'm pretty sure DC is only going for six months, and will definitely miss the Crusaders season and maybe the Tri Nations in 09. Usually depth isn't a problem in NZ but by taking DC out of the equation, I'm guessing Stephen Donald will then start at first five eigth for the AB's. Ouch. That guy would have one of the slowest punts in world rugby. Interested to see how Gasnier goes at rugby. Shoulder charges are legal in league, but he rarely does them anyway. So he shouldn't have the problem of having to eliminate them from his game like Sonny Bill Williams.
Yeah, he's only going for six months, but he's openly admitted to returning after important international matches have been played. He doesn't want to play domestic league rugby in the southern hemisphere anymore apparently.
