At first I thought 2009 unprotected is much better, but then, who knows what Cuban does to his beloved Mavs in terms of trade, free agent signing, plus Kidd will likely play better next season...

we still have a lot of contracts and only a couple expiring... nachbar / diop / krstic. and i believe the nets organization is planning to re-sign them. this leaves little roster room for 3 new players... where i expect at least one if they draft internationally will make them remain there for another year and retain their rights... or send someone to the d-league, both of which we won't really benefit from. from this perspective, i'd shoot for the unprotected 2009 pick.

Considering that certain players might not come out this year, and that the Mavs are only getting older, and we're going to have a high enough pick this year already...I'll take unprotected picks delayed a year.

With our luck the Mavericks will have the best record in the NBA next year. (See 2006 Clippers).

    Both work out good.

Next year the Mavs will do well IMO with a full off-season and training camp so the pick would be higher.

On the other hand, the 2011 pick looks damn good with everyone aging.

    difficult to call because
    1. jkidd will only get to know his teammates better...
    2. with dallas not doing too well this season compared to previous ones, billionaire owner mark cuban is not known to stand pat...
    3. spurs and suns getting older...
but on the other side of the coin,
    1. jkidd and avery johnson doesn't seem to see eye to eye...
    2. mavs already have the highest payroll in the nba, even surpassing the knicks!...
    3. starting pg kidd also getting older and he is playing in the west which has all the great pgs who can run rings around him...plus the surprising young portland blazers team will have greg oden back next yr...with denver also being a pretty dangerous team...

the fact of the matter is... does jkidds playing style fit in with dallas? kidd has always been a perfectionist at running the break with guys throwing down dunks and getting easy shots in the paint. Dallas in my mind is more of a jumpshooting team. their best big guy in the paint is dampier... the rest of the lineup are people who take jumpers. josh howard is the only guy that i can really see as the most athletic guy who can put down the basket... but he hasn't really been fitting in well with kidd imo from his recent numbers. I could see kidd thriving on a team like denver, with all their superb athletes, but dallas? I'm not so sure. Harris actually fit into the dallas system better than kidd has so far... the question is will kidd's playing style ever fit the mavericks system?

In terms of the pick, it seems like it would be better to get the first one. But because getting the 2009 unprotected means Kidd failed, I'm rooting for that one, too.

Does it matter? Look back at Thorn's drafting history, it's pretty split.
