FCD slam Galaxy for West crown, book ticket to MLS Cup CARSON, Calif. – David Ferreira had won praise from teammates and coaches – his own as well as opponents’ – throughout the season, and on Sunday showed that he is indeed worth the hype. Ferreira scored a goal and had an assist as FC Dallas thoroughly defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-0 in the Western Conference Championship at The Home Depot Center. The victory sends FCD to MLS Cup for the first time in their history, while the Galaxy failed to reach their seventh MLS Cup and will no longer be able to atone for last season’s final loss to Real Salt Lake. Kevin Hartman made several strong early saves to keep the Galaxy from breaking through. Just seven minutes in, Mike Magee tested Hartman with a long-distance blast that the FCD 'keeper stretched to parry away. and will no longer be able to atone for last season’s final loss to Real Salt Lake. Unlikely goal good enough for Rapids COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Everyone all week had been talking about the Colorado Rapids' Conor Casey and Omar Cummings combination, but tonight’s Eastern Conference Championship was decided by a Rapids defender with a speculative cross. Kosuke Kimura’s cross in the 42nd minute was the only goal of the game. Some may say it was a lucky goal, but the Japanese player works on delivering dangerous balls into dangerous areas every day at training and all that hard work paid off in Colorado's 1-0 defeat of San Jose. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/unlikely-goal-good-enough-rapids
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS - MY FRIEND! Rapids ride own goal, survive wild finish to win MLS Cup TORONTO – Colorado Rapids, welcome to Major League Soccer royalty. After 15 seasons spent watching other league original franchises carve their identities with success and silverware, Denver’s team is finally a league champion. The Rapids used a scrappy goal from Conor Casey and a game-winning own goal deep into stoppage time to claw their way to a chilly, chippy and ultimately cathartic 2-1 win over FC Dallas in the MLS Cup on Sunday night at BMO Field. The title is the first in franchise history for Colorado, who’ve overhauled nearly everything except their team name since their only other MLS Cup appearance in 1997. But whether it was the team logo (they’ve had three), the coach (they’re on their fifth), or their team colors (from green and blue then to burgundy and sky blue now), nothing seemed to finally do the trick until Sunday night. http://www.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter-recap/rapids-ride-own-goal-survive-wild-finish-win-mls-cup Slightly more than two months ago, the Colorado Rapids lost 3-1 to New York in what appeared to be a relatively comfortable win for the Red Bulls and their famous Designated Players. Yet after the game, it was the Rapids and their coach, Gary Smith, who were talking tough, insisting the game was closer than the score suggested, and saying how much they’d love another crack at a New York team that was then in ascendancy. At the time, it seemed like hollow posturing. When the teams announced a trade the following day, with Colorado sending midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy to New York in exchange for Macoumba Kandji, most observers agreed that Ballouchy’s season, not Kandji’s, would trend upward after the move. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/monday-postgame-colorado-finish-season-flourish
Pretty crazy game to end a pretty crazy season in MLS. Everyone emphasizes the designated players in MLS, as they should, but here are two teams that don't have one playing in the final. I don't think anyone would have bet that we would see a DP free final after Henry, Marquez, Nkfuo, and Fernandez joined the league to go with Angel, Donovan, and Beckham. However, it was really tough to sleep on Dallas as they went 20+ games without a loss and Colorado has a great pair of forwards and finally find a place where Marvell Wynne can take advantage of his superior athleticism. Midfield was key for Colorado where Larentowicz and Mastroeni formed a devastating defensive pair to go with Connor Casey's work-rate and Omar Cummings speed. Dallas is a very young team and will be back among the competitors next season. Pretty rough break for George John to give up the own goal in overtime, but I think his work will earn him a look in Bradley's camp in January.
