Just like the Knicks of the 1990's - this Rangers team looks like a solid team that should get deep into the playoffs each year (make a final a couple of ECF), but just lack that extra something to get over the top. The Knicks were a steel-willed, physical team that lacked that one consistent scorer to go with Ewing, which kept them from getting over the hump. The Rangers have an all-world goalie, who almost has to pitch a shutout every game for the team to win, and the Rangers do not (at least in the playoffs) have a go to guy. The decade is half over and the Rangers are certainly no worse than a 2nd round playoff team or better team each year (like the 90's Knicks), but.....
Not a terrible comparison but you are forgetting the biggest factor in that decade: Jordan. Yeah he was gone for 2 years playing baseball but it's hard to win when you are facing the best player and competitor ever and one of the better teams all time. Rangers don't have that dominant dynasty of a team to beat every year like those Bulls teams of 90-98 Time will tell. The Knicks book of that era is done. We still have time. But they need different piece.
The Knicks also had no luck. Their arguably best team got jobbed by that fight in Miami caused by PJ Brown. Aside from 1994 the Rangers just have a history of not being able to get over the hump.
Mess, Great bring up of that bullshit miami fight which cost us the championship that year. As for rangers, as in 94 with messier most teams had fiery leader that drove team to championship and didn't settle for the its ok we played hard bullshit. Who is that leader with the rangers? Mcd ?? Laughable. Credit for playing hurt but not the inspirational leader this team needs. Thats what Sather needs to import this offseason. As for nash, I was a big fan when we got him but I even say now after he gets his heart transplant find a new home for him somewhere and there will be a team that will give up something for his regular season offense. Watching him on his rare playoff goals react like he just scored a goal in a november game with that blank expression on his face with no emotion is SICKENING.
