The Czech Republic will open defense of its World Championship gold medal on April 30, 2011, the International Ice Hockey Federation announced Tuesday with the release of the tournament schedule.

The 75th IIHF World Championship will be staged in Bratislava and Kosice, Slovakia, from April 29 through May 15, 2011. Slovakia becomes the 21st country to host the IIHF’s flagship event. Bratislava was a World Championship venue in 1959 and 1992, then as part of the former Czechoslovakia.

The Czech Republic will play Latvia in its first game. The other two teams in Group D are Finland and Denmark.

The tournament opens in Bratislava with a match between Germany and 2010 finalist Russia in a rematch of one of the semifinal pairings in this year's tournament. Host nation Slovakia plays its first game the same evening against Slovenia in Group A.

The first game in Kosice features Switzerland against France in a Group B matchup. Olympic champion Canada plays its first game on April 29 against Belarus. Canada also faces France on May 1 and Switzerland on May 3.

The United States hits the ice on April 30 against Austria in Kosice as part of Group C, which also includes Sweden and Norway. The U.S. also has dates against Norway on May 2 and Sweden on May 4.

The gold medal game will be played in Bratislava on May 15.
