Ranked vs. Ranked

For just the third time in 138 seasons of football, a ranked Rutgers squad will face a ranked opponent this Saturday between the 21st-ranked Scarlet Knights and 20th-ranked Bearcats.

Since 2005, Rutgers is 5-1 in its next game following a loss. The Scarlet Knights were 3-0 last season in games following a loss, including the 37-10 victory over Kansas State in the Texas Bowl. The win over North Carolina in 2006 came after a 45-40 loss to Arizona State in the Insight Bowl to close out the 2005 season.

Junior WR Tiquan Underwood had one of the best receiving days in BIG EAST history August 30 vs. Buffalo. The Lawrenceville, N.J., set a new school single-game record with 248 receiving yards. He surpassed Jack Emmer's 13-catch, 237-yard performance on Nov. 16, 1966 at Holy Cross.

After finishing the 2006 season with 23 receptions for 290 yards and four touchdowns, he has 28 receptions for 601 yards and four touchdowns.

Underwood needs just 126 receiving yards to move into 10th place in Rutgers single-season history in receiving yards.

Underwood set career-highs in receptions (10), yards (248) and longest reception (66) vs. Buffalo. He hauled in a 65-yard pass for his first touchdown of the contest in the first quarter and a 66-yard TD reception in the second quarter against the Bulls.

Underwood's 248 yards were the second most in a game in BIG EAST history. Virginia Tech's Ernest Wilford had 279 receiving yards against Syracuse in 2002.

    Settling in Under Center

Teel has started the 2007 season the same way he ended 2006 - as one of the most productive quarterbacks in the nation.

Teel started the season with his best game of career statistically, going 16-for-23 passing for a career-high 328 yards and two touchdowns. He ranks second nationally in passing efficiency and 24th in the NCAA in total offense (second in the BIG EAST).

Over Teel’s past seven games, he is 108-of-170 for 1,865 yards with 15 touchdowns and two interceptions. He is averaging 266.4 yards per game during the streak and is completing 63.5 percent of his passes.

    Moving Up the Record Books

Teel has moved into the school’s top-10 career categories in attempts, completions, passing yards and touchdowns.

The following is a list of where Teel stands in each category in Rutgers career history:

    Category Total Place
    Passing Yards 3,991 5
    Attempts 498 7
    Completions 278 8
    Passing Touchdowns 24 9

    Not in a Rush

Since head coach Greg Schiano took over as defensive coordinator for the Scarlet Knights, Rutgers’ defense has limited the opposition to less than 100 yards rushing 13 times, including three games with negative yards rushing.

Eight times during Schiano’s tenure as defensive coordinator, the Rutgers defense has yielded less than 200 yards of total offense to an opponent.

    Red Zone Success

Rutgers is a perfect 16-for-16 in the red zone this season, scoring 11 touchdowns and five field goals. The Scarlet Knights have limited the opposition to 11 scores in 16 red zone opportunities (seven touchdowns, four field goals).

Rutgers is one of three teams nationally to be perfect in the red zone this season, joining Texas A&M (22-of-22) and Central Florida (17-of-17).

Plenty of Experience Returns Up Front

The offensive line for Rutgers in 2006 allowed just eight sacks - the fewest total in the nation - in addition to laying key blocks for the nation’s second-leading rusher in Ray Rice.

Three starters returned in 2007 up front for Rutgers, including left tackle Pedro Sosa and right tackle Jeremy Zuttah. Sosa, a 2006 BIG EAST Second Team performer, has started 29 consecutive games at left tackle for the Scarlet Knights. He allowed just one sack in 2006.

Zuttah, a 2006 BIG EAST First Team selection, has started 19 consecutive games on the offensive line.

Senior LG Mike Fladell also returns up front. The New York native started all 13 games last season.

The three players have combined for 76 starts during their careers “On the Banks.”

From the Sunshine State to New Jersey

Head coach Greg Schiano has taken full advantage of his ties to Florida as the Scarlet Knights have 18 Florida natives on their roster. Schiano, a former defensive coordinator at Miami, has had great success in recruiting the Sunshine State.

    The “Chop Shop”

A school-record crowd of 44,111 witnessed the biggest victory in school history as Rutgers topped third-ranked Louisville 28-25 on Nov. 9, 2006. The Scarlet Knights have posted the six largest crowds in school history over the last two seasons.

Currently, the growing waiting list for season tickets stands at 8,212. The Scarlet Knights have sold-out all of their home games in 2007.

Rutgers has played in front of six consecutive sell-out crowds, the longest stretch in school history.

    Ito on Target

Senior PK Jeremy Ito became Rutgers’ all-time leader in scoring and field goals in 2006 to cap off one of the best seasons in school history by a place-kicker. Ito, who hit two game-winning field goals vs. USF and Louisville, was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2006.

In 2007, Ito was named a Preseason All-American by Playboy Magazine. This season, Ito is 5-for-7 in field goals and a perfect 21-for-21 on PATs. He has made five straight field goals on the season.

He is second among active players nationally in career field goals (62) and third in scoring (316).

Below is a list of where Ito ranks in Rutgers and BIG EAST history in several kicking categories:

    Category (Total) RU BIG EAST

If Rutgers gives the ball to Ray Rice every time, RU will probably win.

It's part of the reason why RU lost to Maryland last week. They didn't give it to Rice that much.

I just lost all respect for Ben Mauk. Nice job playing with bolts and screws in your arm, but what you just did was low.

Yeah, I could have done without the chop, but Ito did make some lovely gestures to the UC bench after he hit his last FG. It doesn't excuse it, but RU was trash talking a lot

Rice carried it 34 times and caught 4 passes. Handing off the ball to him more wouldn't change the outcome.

BTW, according the UC radio announcers, Rutgers defensive captain turned his back on the UC captains and refused to shake hands at the coin toss. So the animosity was very high from the start.
