Heard and interesting question posed to a political pundit on the radio today.... You're prepping a European that knows nothing of America that will coming to live here. What 3 movies would you show them? Pundit answered: Cool Hand Luke, Hoosiers, and Caddyshack Not bad. Still refining my list...remember this is how you would introduce America.
...speaking of political pundits...there another debate coming up and the GOP really needs to get their shit together and find a way to jettison Trump...he's a cartoon and if the grand old party does not become focussed on a legit contender the Dems will win again next year. ...and that cannot happen.
Right now he's immune to current political calculus. I do think he will burnout, but not until he takes out Jeb and Walker, etc. At some point people will shift to wanting to watch the car wreck that is Trump losing. That will be reality TV.
Nice Rick. IAWL was into my final cut. But I went more contemporary. ET for family and our fascination with space. Rocky because its an American Dream/underdog story. Tombstone because of the history of taking the west.
Great picks Tom... Rick, I've only actually seen the first of your list, but love that one... While I'm partial to Rocky IV over Rocky, I understand Rocky is a better pick here and Goonies over ET... So I'm breaking the question down to what exemplifies America(ns)... I'm thinking being an underdog and surviving/thriving..., being a winner, and something more happy go lucky... Kicking around a few options like Rudy, Miracle, Forrest Gump, Rocky, Goonies, Tombstone, It's a Wonderful Life, A River Runs Through It, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Easy Rider, My top 3 are: Forrest Gump Rocky It's a Wonderful Life Very close behind are A River Runs Through It, Tombstone, and Rudy.
All good picks Hammer. My kids loved Goonies, and literally wore the VHS tape out after watching it over 200 times, no effing joke....! Rudy is a classic American Dream movie, as much IMO as Hoosiers, and A River Runs Through It, Classic, love those fly fishing scenes, but what about Legends of the Fall. Citizen Kane Grapes of Wrath American Gangster Or- The Right Stuff Aviator To Kill a Mockingbird Boiler Room Gangs of NY Death Wish 1-4 Casino Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle An Inconvenient Lie, I mean Truth........ Unforgiven High Plains Drifter Saint Vincent There Shall Be Blood (in case ya' didn't notice, the last 10, are a joke-less harold and kumar and St. Vincent)........BTW-St. Vincent just saw it twice this week, Bill Murray's best and rare leading role in a drama, with plenty of dry humor........perhaps his best serious drama role ever........!!!
I was seriously considering Legends of the Fall as well... And it's amazing how many movies you listed above I've never seen... Loved Gangs of NY! Wasn't a fan of Aviator, but yes, I meant to include Legends of the Fall
Brando was the King of Tinsel Town, one of the first Method School of Great Actors to come, led by Brando 1st.......... there really isn't a Brando movie, I did not like. His latter works were pretty good too, Don Juan Demarco, and Missouri Breaks..... "I don't give a damn if I get paid"......
Great choices Vic but you surprise me since those actors were more from my time, I mean Rob & Ron's time.
LOL......Haven't heard of half of these except the Gangster movies. Can't help it I am Italian after all.
