Yes I am being a Monday morning (ok it's actually Friday morning) GM but those who remember knew where i stood on resigning Cano vs signing Ellsbury. I hated it then... I EXTREMELY HATE IT NOW! Now one could argue that Castro is doing just fine and that the drop off from Cano isn't that large and you would be kinda right, but the fact that ellsbury's production (or lack of) blows. To think Cano hit 39 homeruns in Seattle with that lineup in that park shows he isn't a Yankee stadium power hitter. Still playing over 155+ games a year....his numbers are pretty consistent of his 9 with my. Bottom line...i hate ellsbury thrn...and I cant stand him still.
...yeah, in retrospect, the Ellsbury contract is almost as bad as the one Seattle gave Cano. ...Cano will be nearly 41 at the end of his contract, Ellsbury will be nearly 37. ...and to be fair, the Yanx offered Cano over $20 Mil more than they gave Ellsbury...and the offer to Ellsbury only came after Cano had already turned down the $175 Mil offer from the Yanx...and after he signed with Seattle, Cano said the Yanx "disrespected him" and actually claimed "It wasn't about the money"...yeah, sure Robbie, whatever you say. ...if he had stayed in NY he would have been a 1st ballot HOFer, the greatest Yankee 2Bman ever, had his number retired, and had a plaque in Monument Park...but yeah, "it wasn't about the money".
When Cano left my thought was OK you made your decision have at it. When the Yankees signed Ellsbury, Beltran, and Mc Cann I figured they solved and issue and posted that on this board. Beltran really did not pan out till '16, I respected and still do Mc Canns game behind the dish but disappointed with the hitting angle. Ellsbury, Jesus Christ that was the fucking you got for the fucking you tried to give. Pretty safe bet to say that the young Yankees aren't looking in Ellsburys direction for leadership either. I still feel the same way about Cano, he coulda, he shoulda but he left, have fun in Seattle.
My feeling about Cano was and still is.............good riddance. Ellsbury signing was one of many Cashman over-estimate signings and he has never panned out batting wise and has proved to be brittle on a yearly basis.
