Yesterday we played a 4-2-3-1 formation and obviously it worked extremely well. If you didnt know this is how we set up:

    <div align="center">VDS
    O'Shea Rio Brown Heinze
    Fletcher Carrick
    Ronaldo Giggs Rooney
    Smith</div>

Smith played the lone striker role fantastically well, chasing lost balls and refusing to let the defenders take their time clearing the ball. Giggs created havoc drifting almost everywhere, with Roma unable to contain him.
Ronaldo did what he does best and Rooney was able to come inside far more so he wasnt forced to stay on the left all game. This seemed to suit our counter attacking style with all our pace and power.
With the front four dominating, it meant Carrick was able to get forward with great effect, something we don't see enough of. Here Fletcher was the holding player of sorts, but Fletch still got forward a few times and broke up play extremely well. Usually with Scholes in the team, Carrick plays pretty deep but last night we saw what he can do if given the license to go forward.
So overall the formation worked a treat. Over the next few years, we could line up like this:

    <div align="center">Foster
    Neville Rio Vidic Evra
    Carrick Hargreaves
    Ronaldo Rossi Rooney
    ?</div>

I couldnt decide on a striker. We need a striker who will work hard for the team, chasing lost balls etc. Rossi could easily play in the Giggs role. He has the vision and touch to be a success. What do you guys think? Is this formation the way forward???
