These numbers tell me that qualifying for food stamps is far too easy. The basics of life are food, shelter and clothing. I sincerely doubt that over 13% of our population require assistance to purchase food. Logic dictates that the American taxpayer is subsidizing other goods if this many people require help to purchase food. This abuse of the social safety net is what makes people who pay their taxes and demand little from the government angry.
Perhaps so, but let's give President Obama the credit he deserves. He has inspired and enabled millions of more people to rely on the government to support them--and that's a victory for socialism!! No kidding. Let's hope that people are so angry two years from now that they vote Obama out of office and back to his "community organizer" job.
So the fact that Obama has encouraged Americans to think of the federal government as the solution for every problem has nothing to do with increased use of food stamps? And the punitive restrictions that he's placed on businesses in this country have nothing to do with the unemployment rate?
my guess is that 40% of people on food stamps actually need them. The rest is just abuse of the system.
I once saw a man in a grocery store using food stamps to buy as much bottled water as possible. He then went outside, dumped out all of the water, went back into the grocery store to receive the deposit for the empty bottles and used the money to buy beer. There is probably something wrong with this system.

Way too many people in this country believe they are entitled to a free handout from the government, and are unwilling to go out and find a job. Why work when the gov is going to take care of you?
I was a cashier at a grocery store and I've seen stuff like that, a lot. I would love people paying for a cart full of stuff with food stamps, then I'd watch them pack them away in their Lexus. Or the people who would come through with lobsters and filet mignon and buy it with food stamps. Or the people who would have me ring up half their order on one food stamp card, then start another order on another food stamp card.
I can only imagine where your head has been for the last 40 years . . . You apparently see no connection between Obama's policiies and anything that's happening right now. I guess everything in the economy and in people's real lives is completely divorced from the policies of this president. It's all Bush's fault until something good happens, and then Obama gets the credit.
I'm all for programs like WIC and food stamps...if people really need food, they need food. Abusers of the program should be put into work gangs. There's plenty of highway around Seattle that needs to be cleaned up, and graffiti that needs to be painted over.
