Interesting. Did anyone watch the game? It sounds like Alex Smith and Frank Gore actually looked pretty good.

Also sounds like Brian Griese had a really good game...albeit against the 2nd and 3rd team defenses.

Fantasy sleepers on the 49'ers this year in Smith, Gore and Bryant? Or just a fluke pre-season game?

I saw most of the game (I'm in Illinois right now with the in-laws, so I'm forced to watch Bears football). My impressions:

    - Grossman was horrible. He lacked touch on his passes and was hanging his receivers out there to get killed. At least one of the 3 passes completed was due to a good play by the WR, not a good throw.
    - Griese looked fantastic. Can you say QB controversy? If Griese keeps playing like this, and Grossman plays like he did last night, there won't be a controversy, it will be pretty clear who should start under center.
    - Alex Smith and Frank Gore both looked pretty good. I was particularly impressed with Smith. He did a great job of buying some extra time when the defense got after him and throwing the ball away rather than forcing a bad pass. The downside is that he was running a lot - looks like he may develop a very fine pallette for the taste of grass.

Overall, the Bears look like they have a way to go. The 49ers looked surprisingly good. Who knows how good the niners defense is going to be...you actually have to play against a capable offense to find that out.

According to the highlights I saw, Alex Smith looked decent. I think he'll be a better fit in Norv's offense than a WCO.

It sounds like SF still needs to work on their OL.

Isn't Ron Turner (Norv's Bro) the Bears OC?

I watched it on NFL Network last night. I agree with everything you said. I'll also add the Bears secondary struggled a bit. Smith really played well all day especially early on going 4/5 46 yards.

Doesn't matter at the end of the season, and in the end it doesn't make a difference to the team if they respond well. It does raise some things to watch, such as whether or not Grossman will be able to play when it counts.

FWIW, I think the Bears coaching staff is good enough that they will see this game and be able to fix a lot of the problems...

Just one game. He didnt play enough to get fair analysis. I am sure other NFC northers will be quick to denounce, but fact is griese rolled, so there isnt a problem, we have someone who will suceed, and the bears D will play good, even if zack wants to blast it. He knows the truth, i know the truth.

After watching the Colts last preseason I think it shows how meaningless the games are. Although for a younger team who don't know what they got it maybe says a little more

I agree it's only one game. It makes me as a Packer fan more optmistic about week 1 but in reality if Grossman't struggles again next week. Griese could get the call at QB and Griese in my opinion is the type of QB the Bears need.

I've said it on the other topic and I'll say it again... FRANK GORE FOR STARTER IN SAN FRANCISCO! BTW, I have a feeling Grossman will go down with an injury later. Griese comes in as the starter and Bears actually have a winning chance.

I saw the highlights of the game and Alex Smith looked about 5 times better than last year. He was bootlegging a lot, and looked pretty acurate. Now that he has Larry Allen he will be on the ground 5 times less because of Larry Allen.
