<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>SAN DIEGO (April 12, 2006) -- The Chargers and San Francisco 49ers swapped disappointing former first-round draft picks, with San Diego getting wide receiver Rashaun Woods in exchange for cornerback Sammy Davis.

Woods was a huge disappointment for the 49ers, who chose him with the 31st pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. He set records at Oklahoma State, but never earned even a minor spot in San Francisco's receiving corps, one of the NFL's weakest in the past two years.

Woods caught only seven passes for 160 yards as a rookie, and new coach Mike Nolan apparently saw him as a prime example of the questionable personnel decisions that got Terry Donahue fired as general manager.

Woods was nearly cut in training camp last season -- surviving only because of the salary-cap hit -- and then placed on injured reserve with a minor thumb problem.

Davis was the 30th pick overall in 2003 and never distinguished himself. He started all 16 games in 2003, when the Chargers were an NFL-worst 4-12. He lost his starting job in 2004, reclaimed it when his replacement, Drayton Florence, got hurt, but then got hurt himself and missed the rest of the season.

Florence beat out Davis before last season.

Davis started 30 of 44 games with the Chargers and had three interceptions.</div>
49ers now have to worst reciving core in the draft. Now the 49ers will defintly take Veron Davis to give Alex Smith a target.

Unless Denver trades w/ GB, then SF will take Davis.

I think SF will take Davis, but I don't think I would agree with that. Davis is not going to single-handedly do much for the team unless he plays like Tony Gonzalez or Shockey his rookie year. If SF were smart they would trade down and collect picks. They need help everywhere - they should be stockpiling their picks. Pick up a receiver in one of the mid-rounds.

SF only really needs to get one good WR if they get Veron Davis. Because with Eric Johnson and Veron Davis at the same postion they will try to get them both on the field at the same time. So they will use 2 TE sets to protect Alex Smith also. Eric Johnson caught like 70 passes in 2004 and will come back 100% from injury this year.

SF will have the best TE core, but they worst WR core if they draft Veron Davis

the niners are the worst team...they lost so many people. I think it was because of Garcias leave at QB. TO left then they turned to hell.

Actually, it was the result of years of abusing the salary cap. All of the money they kept pushing back in contracts all came due at once. They fielded the best team they could afford...which wasn't very good.
