"Though the minicamp that starts today is labeled mandatory, the 49ers expect nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin to sit this one out. Franklin has yet to sign the one-year, $7 million tender that comes with getting the franchise tag as he hopes instead for a multiyear deal.

Coming off a career-best season, Franklin skipped all of the 49ers' offseason workouts, and there is no indication things are about to change as the team opens a mandatory session that runs through Saturday.

Because Franklin is not technically under contract, he is not subject to club fines. Coach Mike Singletary said he is unfazed by Franklin's situation, and the coach said that he expects linebacker Manny Lawson to be absent as well. There are rumblings that Lawson is unhappy with his current contract.

"I have heard that Aubrayo will not be here, which does not bother me one bit," Singletary said Wednesday. "Manny is not here — does not bother me one bit. Those guys are working. They are doing what they need to do. I'll see them when I see them."

Singletary was asked if Lawson faced fines for skipping minicamp."
