With a 4pm EST NFL trade deadline, the San Francisco 49ers completed a trade with Tampa Bay sending quarterback Tim Rattay to the Buccaneers for an undisclosed 2006 draft pick. The 49ers and the Chicago Bears were the only two teams that carried four quarterbacks into the start of the regular season, making the Niners an obvious candidate for the Bucs to contact when their starter Brian Griese was lost for the season on Sunday with a knee injury. ?Every year at this time it seems that the quarterback position is what people come looking for, and it just so happened that we had four quality quarterbacks on our active roster,? said head coach Mike Nolan. Rattay played six seasons (2000-05) for San Francisco with 16 starts in 32 career games. He completed 356-of-586 passes for 3,941 yards and 24 touchdowns. The Louisiana Tech product has a 60.8% career completion percentage. He started the first four contests of 2005 completing 56-of-97 passes for 667 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. Following the loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Nolan demoted Rattay and went with first-round draft choice Alex Smith. With Smith entrenched as the team?s starter, and solid backups in Ken Dorsey and Cody Pickett, the team felt good about making the swap with Tampa. ?Ken Dorsey and Cody Pickett are very capable young players who have worked extremely hard in the role of backup quarterback,? said Nolan. ?I believe they?ll do a quality job for us, and given our injury situation in other areas, it opens up a roster spot for us and will allow us some flexibility in filling other positions.?

So is Ken Dorsey the backup now? I hope he is because as we all know he's from THE U [IMG] and I would like to see him get the nod if Alex Smith gets injured.

Well, I do not like this trade. First, we trade an awesome linebacker Jamie Winborn for a freaking 7th, when we couldve easily gotten a 2nd and we could REALLY use him right now. Now, we trade Rattay for a 6th, and probably couldve gotten a 3rd for him, since the Bucs are desperate. Anyway, I think the main reason for this trade was not to get some steam off of Smith so he doesnt have to look over his shoulder, not for Dorsey to become backup, but for Cody Pickett to finally be able to be the 3rd string QB.All throughout the preseason there was article after article in the paper about Pickett doing a great job in camp, in the preaseason games, everything. I think management really likes him, and this was more for him.

Are you nuts? Rattay isn't worth a 3rd round pick. Regardless of "Desperate times call for desperate measures"They got ripped off. He's worth a 7th. [IMG]

The only reason Rattay cant play well is because the 9ers O-Line is CRAP!Rattay will, IMO, succeed in Tampa if he gets the chance to play

Tim Rattay is a great backup quarterback but lets face it thats all he'll ever be...its time to move on i would rather have smith in there learning the offense and taking his rookie bumps at least its a learning process..same thing the giants did with eli.
