This is a series of articles that piggy backed on a recent 60 Minutes episode about the rise of displaced workers as a result of computer and robotic machines. The 3 parts (this is part 3) are very interesting. The question is- what to do? http://news.msn.com/us/will-smart-machines-create-a-world-without-work
I don't see how that's possible in a service based economy. Will computers be able to write their own software? Will machines be more cost effective in the kitchen? Will robots be able to dance on stripper poles for tips? I don't think it's possible in the next 100 years.
If that many people are out of work, won't our society/economy crumble? The majority of people in the country would not have money for food, beverages, shelter, etc.
The articles lay out the concerns as well as historical periods of high unemployment due to technology. Maybe we can tax technology to stem the tide or try and make proactive changes to provide more technology workers or something like that.
