On Thursday, the 76ers traded veteran guard Willie Green and forward Jason Smith to the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for big men Darius Songaila and Craig Brackins. Sixers coach Doug Collins said he broke the news to Green after his morning workout at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "It was tough for me because Willie was in the gym," Collins said at the team's annual media luncheon. "And he may be one of the best pros this franchise has ever had. . . . I brought him out and I talked to him to the team, with him, and just shared what I felt about Willie, and his little son was just crying." Green, 29, has played all seven of his NBA seasons with the Sixers. Since 2003-04, Green's rookie season, he has averaged 9.4 points in 22.8 minutes. Smith, who is entering his fourth NBA season, missed the 2008-09 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and has struggled since. Smith, 24, averaged 4.5 points a game during his 2007-08 rookie season, but only 3.4 points last season.
