Here is a little joke i read in SI i thought you all might enjoy More than a million fans showed up for the patriots' second super bowl victory party in 3 years. In a related story, Buffalo Bills safety Lawyer Milloy got $20 off on a Toro snowblower. Bet he is happy bout the trade now, i mean $20 off
Does that mean Rodney Harrison made the best choice of the year? Of course that means San Diego screwed up... which was worse, San Diego letting Harrison go or Milloy going to Buffalo?
I would say he made the right decision to say the least to go to us instead of the raiders. As for milloy he made the worst decision of his career. He should have just taken the pay cut and won another title.
I dont think it was about money, it's about respect. Same shit now with Ty Law. I dont agree with it. Thats why teams should not sign players to these huge contracts to begin with, so then in the future they would not have to ask for a paycut. In fact, I dont think that the Eagles had to cut a player cause of salary, or ask a player to reduce his salary yet under the Andy Reid regime. That why letting older players leave via free-agency is not such a bad thing, plus you get compensatory picks as well.
Good point E4L. Teams shouldn't pay the big salaries, but unfortunately they are forced to do so. Competition is at an all time high to sign big names and win that teams overpay. It seems to be coming to a head, but that remains to be seen.
Ty Law, Lawyor Milloy, and most restructured contracts were pre belichick/Pioli era. We can thank Bobby Grier and Pete Carrol for the restructuring. Also the reason your eagles don't have to ask someone to restructure is because they don't spend money. The eagles always seem to have a ton of cap room. We always have just enough. We spend all we can but it is spread out between everyone. As for the respect issue if Lawyor had a season like he was capable of the year before we would have signed him.
DUde, they do spend the money. They just dont spend it on players that are going to be cut during the contract. McNabb is 2nd highest paid QB in the league. I believe Dawkins is the highest paid safety in the league. But none of these players will be cut before their contract is up, therefore there will be no dead-cap space. The current salary cap is more then enough to pay everyone, however a lot of teams carry a shitload of dead-cap space. Look at it this way, when a player gets cut on June 1st (which happends a lot). His cap hit will be divided n 2 years, which is nice for the team, but it also means that you will pay for 2 years for a player thats not even on your team. Thats why the eagles have the space, cause they dont do that. That why we did not sign Hugh Douglas, Brian Mitchell and other older player. Hugh will prolly be cut this year, Mitchel already was cut.
It comes down to longevity. The Steelers signed Bettis & Gildon to long contracts when they had hit 29 or 30. Stupid, but they know they can beat the system by spreading out large amounts of money over long periods of time. It's a game I wish they didn't play, but some teams do. And either they have to cut those guys early or they retire, or the team eats the contract. It's a tough way to do business.
NICE JOB SF. Two of the same post....wasting space on my board!!!!!!!! haha j/k. Well you would no better about the eagles than I do it just always seemed like they didn't spend all the money they could. I don't mind how the pats do things cus it has worked. As long as they keep the cap under control I don't care how they do it. Also I think they like having the leverage of being able to pressure on a guy when he still has time left on his contract. I think they feel that type of pressure to perform year to year allows them to get better results from there players cus when you see a lawyor milloy get cut cus he didn't perform to his ablilities and wouldn't accept a, small might I add, pay cut you know if you don't perform you could be gone to.
I can't argue with the logic on the Pats. They have been very cap savvy and very good to boot. That's the blueprint for the NFL. Half of the success in the NFL now is balancing the cap and the Patriots do it better than most.
