Everybody says Michael Jordan is the greatest Basketball player of all time because of his leadership, Will to win, Determination, etc..... But my question to you guy is Do you think there can be a "Greatest Football Player of all time" Some of my friends said yes because a certain player may of did his job alot better then other players at that position but that still doesn't make you the greatest football player of all time, it only makes the person the greatest at what ever position they played. This being why I say There can not be a "Greatest Football Player Of All Time".The Greatest Football player can't be a QB because all he's doin is thorwing the passes and handing the ball off to the HB while the blockers are protecting him.(Even though sometimes he may try to run it in for a first down himself ex: Vick, McNabb, Young) It couldn't be a blocker either because even though there proctecting the QB that's not really something you can really put yourself a head of anybody else at that position or another other position besides strenth. "The Greatest football player of all time" can't be a reciever or HB either because the QB has to throw them the ball or hand them the ball in order for them to do there job.and even though Defense wins games "The Greatest Football Player of all time can't be a Defensive player because even though there preventing the other team from scoring that still doesn justify a person as being better then everybody else in the whole league but only everybody else who play that respectable position on the field. And it definitally couldn't be one of the Special Team's players because there only on the field for a ver short period of time to either return a kick or punt.So after all you've read my question is do you agree or disagree that there is/will be in the future a "Greatest Football Player Of All Time"?
I agree there is a greatest NFL player of all-time because a player who is better at his position then others were at their position are the greatest players of all-time. (but they gotta be the best at their position at least)
I think that there isn't a greatest football player of all time because you can't compare a quarterback and a linemen together. Linemen are very underrated and are a huge part of a team's success...however, quarterback is the most important position in the NFL and gets recognized the most. There might be an offensive linemen who played better at his position than a quarterback did at the quarterback position but the quarterback will always have more respect because he carried and led the team. There cannot be a best football player of all time because there's so many positions and so many underrated positions but you can compare the greatest players at their position.
You cant judge the greatest football player of all time, because there are so many very different positions, unlike basketball, where players play different positions, but their objective is basically the same as everyone else on the team. Defend, pass, score. Well in football, someone could be a DB, and his objective is to cover the WR, intercept passes, tip passes, or tackle a player if he gets downfield. Or you could be a QB, who's objective is to run the offense, hand the ball off, pass the ball, and put points on the board.Do you guys see what I'm trying to get at here?
It's harder for football but obviously Jim Brown, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice are the top few choices.
I agree, there can't really be a greatest football player of all-time but if it were characterized by positions then maybe you'd be able to make a list.
:HAHAHA: Barry Sanders had the greatest moves of all time and would of broken the record if he wasn't in such a bad situationthey wouldn't release him so he was forced to retirehe left the record sitting there where he would of easily broken it the next seasonit took Emmitt Smith three more seasons than it would of taken Barry toand it took Walter Peyton two more seasons to get the record than it would of taken Barry to1. Emmitt Smith - 17,4032. Walter Payton - 16,7263. Barry Sanders - 15,269LMAO he would of broken the record and then absolutely destroyed it if he was given three more seasonsgranted walter peyton was a great playerbut he wasn't touching Barry
I think it was Payton that even admitted Sanders was the GOAT in regards to halfbackI think you can categorize it by position... but it's impossible to tell which stands out as the best 'NFL player' is... football is too much of a team game to tell

I wish it was.
This is a great thread and it had me thinking and I've come to a conclusion. I do believe that there can be a best player and that's the best QB, which in my opinion is probably Joe Montana. The RB is important but only one part of the offense. The o-line I believe, as a whole, is the most important part of the football team but not individually.WR's are great and in some cases they really help the QB like Moss did for Culpepper. But you see most of the great QB's making the recievers look good with their great passing ability. Look at how good McNabb was mostly having bad recievers except for that 1 year with TO and Brady has made his recieving corps look good. I guarentee Deion Branch would not be the #1 reciever for the majority of NFL teams and he became a Super Bowl MVP with Brady.d-lineman, linebackers, secondary defensive players are all important but I wouldn't consider a single one the best unless they absolutely destroy records and lead their team for years. The quarterback has the ball on every single position and is responsible for most of the offense on the team. The good ones are the leaders of the team and the reason why they win. Everybody helps out eachother but I think the most important individual player in the success of a team is the QB so I would choose Montana.

You can argue the best at each position, but not really just 1 player.
