So I was thinking of this the other day and I know it's not practical, but it's an interesting idea to chew on. Hear me out.

So like most Yankee fans, i believe that if you are not going to win the World Series, I don't care if you win 84 games or 64, as long as I know they are improving.

    My proposal is this:
For several season go with a Moneyball type system. Keep the payroll for the active roster around 80-100 million. Invest in players the A's invest in. Look really in depth for sabremetrics and at worst, you field an 80 win team hopefully, with room for more. If the A's can do it, why can't the Yankees with twice the budget?

Now for the radical idea: all that is good and well, but it's not really improving the Yankees for the long term, my next idea is a radical way to improve the farm system that I've never seen a team do before

It is to allocate over 100 million for signing big free agents. hanley, scherzer, lester, stanton eventually, really anyone who's a big FA. Then trade them all for top prospects but eat most of the salary. you don't see big players getting traded for top prospects unless they don't have a big contract or they have an expiring one, people don't want to lose prospects and take on a huge payroll. So don't let them. Say Scherzer is signed for 24 million a season. Eat 16 of that. And you are now shopping a Cy young winner for just 8 million dollars, the prospects you can get for him is probably baffling.

Do that for like 4 big free agents, land close to 10 top prospects, and mix prospects and moneyball for awhile until you can sign some big free agents or make some big trades have a little more financial stability.

Sure they will be paying well over 200 million a year and less than half of that for active players, but it's improving the team, no?

    Thoughts on this.

PS- does the MoneyBall syndrome mean the Yanx are gonna' replace Cashman with Billy Beane.......as he may be available after he threw his lot on the table, and WILL not see an ALCS....my prediction they won't get past the Halos', if they do, they won't get past any other Divison Leaders..ll

so in other words pay other teams bills even more than you do with revenue sharing and the luxury tax bill

this will not work as no free agent will want to come to the yankees only to be traded off to a team that they have no control over.

Free Agency is has everything to do with where the player wants to go.
You may get away with this once....but to constantly do that...wont work

yeah, you might get killed by the agents, then again....if you came strong with large offers many players would sign on for that reason alone, and go along for the ride.

you could do it in a sense though, hell the red sox just kinda DID do it 2 of the last 3 years (dealing AGon and crawford right after they signed them, beckett, lester, peavy, lackey, etc)... and they won a world series right in the middle of it

...but Boston didn't win a WS with a bunch of unproven prospects...and if the Yanx were to acquire players like "hanley, scherzer, lester, stanton" there's no reason to then trade them away for a few prospects who may or may not pan out 2-3-5 years from now.

Adrian Gonzalez was aquired by the Sox in a trade, they did not sign him.
Both Beckett and Crawford were salary dumps as they both had a history of injuries and the Dodgers were desperate.

i dont disagree with anything you said btw, just that they did reap some decent prospects/ players in those deals. not advocating having to blow up an expensive team because of excessive suckitude. but it seemd to work out.

Emphasis on past tense.....no longer "Desperate", ......clawing and scratching their way quit nicely these days......f'krs better represent the NL, or else, ..... well, ........"otherwise, wait til next year", to early for that.......

How can ya' not care for a Bums Team led by Donnie BB....??? otherwise under Tommy, I hated those effing Bums.....anyone wan't to buy a soiled pair of Lasorda undies, piss stained, and otherwise soiled, ...... from the 88 Series game 1 bottom of 9th inning, sell 'em to ya' cheap too, f'krs stink.....

    (a story behind all this)

No doubt Al.....Crawford's History of DL time, has recently seen the Bums talking of dumping Crawford, instead of letting Kemp go as a UFA after this year. Crawford still has a couple years on his contract. Tho' Crawford is a welcome Catalyst when he is playing, and who ever knows when he will if ever stay healthy. (never)....Kemp is streaky with an attitude at times. F'kn Whiner......

NTM- I doubt we will see Hanley Ramirez in Bums Rags after this year. Barney is playing his heart out and Dee Gordon's original position is SS. Say goodbye to the goof off,, who once could carry a team on his bat....(Hanley-never seen a year like this, where his head is NOT in the games). Gonzo has been a God Send, Beckett a surprise, yet back on the DL, and I'd off him and Haren in a moments notice, not blink an eye.

And on top of all this, who the hell really thinks Chad Billingsley is really going to return or return to form, not me....! I'd off him too.

Overall- I'd like to see the Bums keep all 4 OF'rs. It's nice to have a premium extra OF'r when one goes down.....then ya' got Puig-gy....acts like a Little Leaguer when he's not making incredible catches, otherwise he's a wrecking crew, wrecking himself....!

Ya' gotta understand, I grew up in NY, when the Giants were still playing at the Polo Grounds. The Yanx were and always are #1 in my book.

As a 2nd favorite team, or NL Team, my Dad moved us to; in the early-mid 60s. to Shreveport LA, Wichita, KS., and Merced, CA. before I moved here to So. Cal.

Shreveport was then the home of the AAA Giants Farm Club. Every ST, the SF Giants played their AAA affiliate in Shreveport. Then 2 yrs. later (when living in Merced, an hour south of Frisco and Oakland).....we got seats 1st row behind the Giants Dugout in Candle Stick Park. I crawled out on the Dugout, after warm ups, and layed out like a fish, hanging over the dugout entrance, and got Willie Mays, McCovey, Marichal, M. McCormack, G. Perry's autographs, (and a few more) on my Score-Card.....still got it too......!!!

The Usher never said a word to me, I was never asked or told to get off the dugout, yet the Usher, prevented the 30+ kids behind me, coming down the aisle to try to do the same.

You will never see this again in MLB.....!!!

In other words, I got mine.....:smiley-yup:

    and-

I don't dislike the Giants, I never liked the Bums under Lasorda, Alston yes...Lasorda no go.....Then comes Torre and Donnie BB. How can ya' not like a Donnie BB led team.....

    Unrestricted Frisco Assassin.....
