A-Rod returns to Yanks lineup, batting cleanup

Alex Rodriguez was activated from the disabled list and inserted into the lineup for Monday's series opener against the Rays. Manager Joe Girardi put A-Rod in the cleanup spot and made him the designated hitter.

"We could use his bat, for sure. We need him to come back and be productive for us," Girardi said after the Yankees lost, 8-3, to the Orioles on Sunday to cut their American League East lead to only two games.

Rodriguez appeared in two rehab games for Class A Tampa, but the Yankees opted to give Rodriguez work on the side Sunday, rather than playing him in Tampa's 11 a.m. ET season finale against Lakeland after a night game Saturday in which Rodriguez played third base and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Girardi said there was nothing physically wrong with Rodriguez, who is 0-for-7 with a walk in two games, but that the decision was simply a result of the quick turnaround.
