"Something’s missing on this team. It’s not effort – I won’t deny that these kids are playing hard. It’s definitely not talent and it’s definitely not expectations. But that intangible, un-bottle-able thing that drove last year’s team and even the less-talented one before it, it’s not in this locker room.

Yes, losing is because of untimely interceptions (there’ll be plenty on Mike Teel in tomorrow’s paper) and soft pass coverage and shoddy special teams play. But winning takes big plays and big plays are sometimes about more than just Xs and Os and … heck, I’ll let Eric Foster say it: “We need to find something.”

Now of course no one wants to think that something is emotional. Ray sure didn’t want to, as he swore “this has nothing to do with effort” and then tried to deflect some of the troubles onto all the new faces, saying, “Our young guys just don’t have the game experience yet.”

Jeremy Zuttah didn’t want to believe Rutgers’ mindset is an issue either. But when he said “I think we’re tough enough” and “I think everybody wants it,” he hardly sounded sure. And after three full seasons and 31 starts, Jeremy was too smart not to concede that this team might need a little more burn.

Would Brian Leonard ever play in a way that let an opposing corner jaw all game like Mike Mickens did? Would Devraun play in a way that let an opposing quarterback think he could mockingly mimic Rutgers’ chop as Ben Mauk did? Jeremy shook his head picturing both slights, sighed and said his own generally more laid-back nature is going to be the first thing to go today.

“I’ve got to do something,” he said as he cleaned through his locker Saturday. “If you want to change, you’ve got to change something. It’s not going to just happen.”
