"The most important offseason training of Adrian Peterson's career might have come on a couch.

    Therapy was in session.

For years, Peterson suppressed feelings because that's what Peterson men do. They are strong-willed and tough, just like Peterson's bruising running style, ready to handle their own.

"I think he got that from me," said Nelson Peterson, Adrian's father. "I keep things inside."

Something had to give. Peterson, the fourth-year Vikings running back, had arguably his worst year as a pro in 2009. His rushing average dropped to 4.4 yards per carry, and he fumbled seven times.

And he wasn't happy about it.

The old Peterson would have bottled up those feelings, mother Bonita Jackson said, but suddenly Peterson started talking.

Fast-forward to the 2010 season, and Peterson is still talking. He's exuding confidence and proclaiming himself the NFL's best running back.

This is no surprise to some of his family members after an offseason of ventilation and rigorous work with Houston-based trainer James Cooper.

"He just felt like he could have done more last year," Jackson said. "He became more forthcoming about wanting more, being more focused and being patient. For him, it was a really important offseason for that reason." "
