A It’s true to say that, initially, Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD was a massive disappointment, falling far below the quality of the Marvel films whose world it shared. The opening episodes were formulaic, the action tepid and there were not nearly enough links to the wider Marvel Universe. Additionally, while Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson moved effortlessly from films to TV, some of the new supporting cast were less than convincing, especially the Brit double act Fitz and Simmons. However, after that very shaky start, things gradually began to pick up mid-way through the season and then the show was helped immensely by the complete change of direction the show given following the momentous events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The masterstrokes of having SHIELD infiltrated by old enemy HYDRA and the shocking reveal that heroic, dependable agent Grant Ward was actually a murderous traitor upped the stakes considerably as Season 1 ended on a high.
