As part of the NBA?s Summer of Goodwill, Iverson hosted his annual charitable weekend from July 9-11 in the Washington D.C. area to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington & Philadelphia. The weekend consisted of the Allen Iverson Slow Pitch Softball Tournament, a Rap Session with kids from the Boys & Girls Club, and the Allen Iverson Celebrity Softball Game. More than 7,000 fans packed Prince George?s Stadium in Bowie, MD to watch various celebrities compete in a friendly game of softball. Participants included NBA stars, LeBron James, Tracy McGrady, Steve Francis, Rip Hamilton, and actor Larenz Tate. At the conclusion of the weekend, Iverson presented a $40,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs. ?A lot of kids look at me and know that I come from where they come from...they can identify with me,? said Iverson. ?Whatever it takes, I am committed to community service as long as I have a breath in my body. I was in tough situations and I made something out of my life...I am here to let kids know that they can do the same thing.? Iverson?s work in the community is year round. He purchases a block of tickets to 76ers home games that are donated to area kids and non-profit groups in the Philadelphia area as part of A.I.?s Crossover Crew every season. During the holidays, Iverson has purchased turkey dinners for area families. Each season, he meets with kids through the Make-A-Wish Foundation who are invited to a 76ers home game and he has also teamed up with Reebok to refurbish basketball courts in Memphis, Washington, Hampton and currently Philadelphia. The NBA will make a $5,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Club of Philadelphia on behalf of Iverson in recognition of the award. </div> Full Article Courtesy of Sixers.com/NBA.com He joins Aaron McKie and Marc Jackson who won it in November, nice to see him get recognized more and more this offseason. From his own good words, Larry's kind words, the Olympics, and now this. He is truly a humanitarian.
Yep, he is receiving lots of praise. Quite a change from the last half of last season. Well, I think we will finally get a handle on who AI really is next season. If there is a problem, no-one will be confused about who is to blame. It will be interesting to watch.
What this is yet another great move for AI to improve his image this summer. Pretty soon he will have a bigger "nice guy" image then kobe did before the rap trial and stuff. LOL I dont think it will go that far, but that he has made himself into a great leader in the team and community is true. He gets captin of team USA, stays in philly, hits a game winning shot, and gets community assists award.... not a bad summer for the answer if you ask me. Now all that he needs to top it off is a gold metal and it will be the perfect summer. I can just imagine AI's what I did on my summer vacation report lol. Congrats AI.
hahahahahahahaha thats really funny but im really glad iverson got the award hopefully this summer doesnt turn out like last season when everything's good in hte summer and everybody expected a good season and they sucked
OMFG I have that same coat!!!!! lol anyway, Iverson is really proving his maturity this summer. Only nice guys get the Community Service Award and most people see AI is a gangster. All that is about to change my friends. He is reall changing his image. I know he changed his image to me. Im sure he did the same to all of you. And I agree with Pure Skillz that AI is having a perfect Summer.
