Mature Iverson touts his charity event and fatherhood

The Sixer discussed being a role model as he talked up his Celebrity Summer Classic in Washington.

WASHINGTON - Maybe it had to do with the fact that he turned 30 last month. Maybe it was the glasses that gave him a scholarly, mature appearance.

Whatever it was, Allen Iverson took the microphone yesterday at his news conference touting this weekend's Allen Iverson Celebrity Summer Classic and sounded like a shorter, skinnier, do-ragged version of Dr. Phil.

Iverson talked at the charity event of the importance of helping and encouraging children. He discussed his thoughts on being a role model. He talked about the significance of fatherhood and the joy of awaiting the birth of his fourth child. (His wife, Tawanna, is expecting their second daughter.)

"I love being a father," said Iverson, who wore a gray T-shirt, baggy jean shorts and a black baseball cap with the Phillies' "P" on it. "I love doing things with my kids. I want every father to know that it's something special... it's somebody's life. So everything you say sticks to them and they pay attention to it. They see the things that you do.

"If you're a [jerk] as a person and you raise a kid, nine times out of 10, that kid's going to have a [jerk] mentality. That's just the way it is. I try to stress to fathers that they're looking right at you."

Iverson's called his daughter's impending birth "a beautiful feeling" and quipped: "One more kid and I'll have a basketball team."

it's nice to see how much AI changed when he was first drafted. from being an immature complainer, he definetly changed his personality, and now, i think he is one of the best role models in the nba.
