All of the polls in the senate, house, and president race were way off.

14% lower voter turnout even with Sarah Palin on the ballot...

The fact it was a blowout probably discouraged people from voting late in the day.

Probably that discouraged some, but the effect seems much larger than that. In 2004, Alaska had 66% turnout. In 2008, with Palin on the ticket, 54%. Seems a bit suspicious.

I'm not so sure about that. I live in Alaska and drove by polling stations several times on election day. I have honestly never seen them so crowded.

Further, we had two contentious races for the house and the senate. I very much doubt that the national returns would have had any impact on turn-out.

I do find it rather confusing that polls place Mark Begich was ahead of Ted Stevens by 10, yet he lost the election. Ethan Berkowitz was up by 5 and lost also. It really does give me pause because polls may be off, but they're usually not that far off.

Alaska is a VERY conservative state. But the more moderate people, like me, were really coming out of the closet for this election, particularly as the national results poured in. To me, moderates and serious democrats seem to have hit the polls in force for this election.

I guess my perception must have been a radical example of sampling error. Right?

    Democrat votes were dumped.

It's obvious, but certainly no surprise. Alaska is the most corrupt, corporate-owned State in the Union, with very little Federal oversight.

Yeah, when you have a corrupt governor, corrupt senator, and corrupt house member, what do ya expect.

Well, thank the Good Lord above we are now led by a group of Chicago pols. If there is one area that practices good, clean, honest government, it's the Chicagoland area!

    Hello darkness, my old friend
It's quite suspicious. In a year when polls (as a group) were very accurate around the nation, Republicans in Alaska outperformed polls by 10-15 points. And, at the same time, voting was down by 14% in a year where their popular governor was on the national ticket and there was a high-profile Senate race. Strange coincidence.
