...Gordon is a good, but not great player who is now on the wrong side of 30 and will soon begin showing signs of diminishing skills and speed and durability...the Royals desperately wanted to keep him and they proved it by overpaying/overextending him. ...but hey, that's the nature of pro sports and if the owners are crazy enough to give out contracts like this, the player would be crazy not to take it.
I agree that the price was steep. But there is more to a ball player than his monetary worth. I believe Gordon is a main cog in that Royals' locker room. The Royals' management believes he is a motivating person that aids the team. They did not want to lose him to another team. Yes, pro sports is crazy when it comes to ludicrous contracts; I feel, this would be the exception. This contract is a far cry from Cashman's multi contract debacles. As with everything in life and sports is no exception, let's see how this plays out.
...^^^well stated. The Royal had to resign him. ...Cashman?...pshhh. He's had the luxury or using a blank checkbook for years and years to simply throw money at holes. I wonder how good the A's could have been if Billy B. had been given the payroll that Cashman was was given...and just how bad would the Yanx be if Cashman had been given Oaklands paltry payroll ?
I agree, Gordon is similar no doubt, to the spark plug catalyst Jeter often was for the Yanx; but I'm not gonna' compare Gordon to our beloved Captain.....RE2PECT....
