<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">New Jersey Nets center Alonzo Mourning will no longer be able to play professional basketball, effective November 24, 2003, due to an existing medical condition, Nets President/General Manager Rod Thorn announced today.
“ It is with great sadness that I make this announcement,” said Thorn. “Alonzo is a true champion and a very courageous athlete who attempted to defy the odds with his comeback to the NBA. Unfortunately, his medical condition will not allow him to continue his basketball career. Our thoughts and prayers are with him as he continues his fight against this disease.”

Mourning, who was in his 12th season in the NBA, was signed by the Nets as a free agent on July 16, 2003. He had played in all 12 games for the Nets this season, averaging 8.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 17.9 minutes of action. Mourning brought career stats of 20.3 ppg and 9.8 rpg into the campaign, which included three years with the Charlotte Hornets and eight (seven active) years with the Miami Heat.

Drafted by Charlotte in the First Round (2nd overall pick) of the 1992 NBA Draft and selected to the All-Rookie First Team, Mourning was a seven-time NBA All-Star, a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year (1998-1999, 1999-2000), a member of the All-NBA First Team in 1998-99 and Second Team in 1999-2000, a two-time member of the All-Defensive First Team (1998-99, 1999-2000) and was the winner of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 2001-02.

Very, very sad. Great player. The worst thing about it is that he didn't get any warning. He just has to stop doing what he loves immediately.

It's not like this is KMart's fault, but I'm sure that's all people are gonna be talking about....

sad to see a great warrior go down like this...i can just imagine what KMart is feeling right now...although it's not his fault, he must be feeling guilty right now...

Zo gave us hope of doing better in the Finals...i just hope his intensity rubbed on to his teammates in his short stay with the Nets...

Wow. I was really shocked to come home and see the headline at yahoo. It said "Alonzo Mourning Retires" and all I thought of was his disease and Martin's comments. I feel really bad. I thought he was doing better considering he came back. All the love to Zo.<3

    Kenyon Martin:
It?s terrible news. His health and his life are more important than basketball. Hopefully we will come out and play the way we need to play. We realize this is not guranteed. That?s proof right there. He came in and worked hard every day. He showed no signs. That?s the worst part about it. It?s a big loss for us. We pray for him to stay strong. He came out and worked hard every day. He took no days off.

    Sad news [IMG]

My prayers go out to Zo and hope he finds a donor soon and can get on with his post-basketball life. I'll always take that memory of Van Gundy grabbing Zo's leg in the play offs back in the good 'ole days.

Martin and Jefferson can rot in hell. If I were Byron Scott I'd suspend their asses for at least a game and maybe a fine. Punks.
