http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2888661Amaechi has really been going all out since coming out about being gay...he definitely wasn't a good player but his actions speak very loudly. I was also appalled by Tim Hardaway's remarks about gays. It's a terrible thing that the idea that if an active player were to come out, he would lose his status etc and Amaechi is doing a good job in leading against this kind of homophobia.
I don't think what Tim Hardaway did was right, but I don't think he should have lost his job and other stuff for it. I mean, I am a little homophobic as well, I don't hate 'em, they just make me nervous. Does that mean I should be banned from BBW?

I think Amaechi just did it to publicize his book. Seems pretty obvious... he says he's gay, then comes out with a book. What a coincidence.

Maybe he's just trying to maybe...live his life.

If he had not publicly announced he was gay, he certainly wouldn't sell books like Rodman or even any mid-level players. The fact is that most people in America had no idea who the guy was before he announced that, then he writes a book with a title that basically sounds homosexual.I'm not saying the guy was doing it for the money, but he clearly announced he was gay to sell more books.

I'm just saying that it was like what, less than a week before the book came out that... he came out? My point is that it was a publicity stunt. He could have come out years ago or just by putting out the book, but he didn't. I'm not saying he should keep it secret. I just don't think it's such an engaging topic that you need to announce it then release a book about it. But then again, people eat that sh*t up (as is apparent in this thread and others).
I didnt even know this guy played in the NBA. Apparently he was some sh*tty player on cleveland(and damn did cleveland have plenty of sh*tty teams in the 90s,Lebron james really did save their franchise. they might even be in the finals now.)
I remember him. It's weird having players that you watched before announce this stuff. Gay pride parades are...gay.

I don't understand why him being in the NBA makes it a big deal if he participates in things he believes is right.

You've seen an example of this, look at the posts in this thread.
Amaechi coming out and then coming out with a book were contrived and harmonious events, but the perspective is engaging and original for an autobiography. A black, British, pro-basketball player in Utah, somewhat scared to come out.
