Amare Could Miss Scrimmages

Any mention of Suns forward Amaré Stoudemire sitting out training camp scrimmages in Tucson is liable to give fans heart palpitations after he cut camp short in 2005 before microfracture knee surgery and watched camp there last year after an arthroscopic procedure.

The knees are fine, but there is a strong chance that a left-ankle sprain will cause the Suns to hold Stoudemire out of some five-on-five play next week in Tucson. Stoudemire suffered a second-degree ankle sprain while scrimmaging in late July and recovered after rehabilitation. He aggravated the ankle in a pickup game among Suns players two weeks ago.

"It gave him enough discomfort to want to check it out," Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said.
Stoudemire went to Los Angeles on Tuesday for a 90-minute exam by ankle specialist Richard Ferkel.

After conferring with Suns medical staff members and seeing the MRI exam results, Ferkel concurred with Suns team physician Thomas Carter that Stoudemire just needs to limit his activity.

The Suns want him to avoid two-a-day action. He can participate in the morning non-contact sessions of walk-through offenses and defenses and shooting but could be held out of night scrimmages.

"We just want him to take it easy so it doesn't linger throughout the season," Suns head athletic trainer Aaron Nelson said.

The Suns have five days of practices at McKale Center starting Tuesday.
