Aside from the election of Donald Trump, a businessman born into wealth whose only notable expertise is in reality television, there is now more evidence that the right-wing’s long game of denigrating U.S. institutions to reshape political discourse is succeeding. A new Pew Research Center poll released on Monday revealed that there is one U.S. institution perceived through a larger partisan divide than even the media: It’s college.

For the first time, a majority of Republicans think that colleges and universities have a negative impact on the country. Fifty-eight percent say that colleges “are having a negative effect on the way things are going in the country,” according to Pew. In other words, the Wall Street banks are more popular with Republican voters than Stanford, Harvard or the University of Akron.

Just two years ago, a majority of Republicans, 54 percent, rated universities’ effect as positive. As Pew noted, “this shift in opinion has occurred across most demographic and ideological groups within the GOP,” but in particular the poll found that positive views of colleges among Republicans under the age of 50 sunk by 21 percentage points from 2015 to 2017. While Republican views of colleges and universities remained largely the same throughout much of the Obama administration, 65 percent of self-identified conservatives now say that colleges and universities have a negative impact on the country. Positive views of colleges dropped even among Republicans who hold a college or graduate degree, declining by 11 percentage points during the last two years.

The president can't handle a voting population that's smarter than he is.....only he can fix things...and now those math geniuses from overseas are going to find work elsewhere.....I don't think people realize the impact this fall term will have on the economy of most college towns or what impact the absence of a labor force in farming will have when the crops are ready to harvest....

You know, it used to be Republicans were MORE pro-science. Too many on "the left" associated science with the political Apollo program, nuclear weapons and corporate America.

I know college isn't for everyone and people who go to college are not "better" or necessarily "smarter". But two years ago Republicans agreed it was a good idea to be educated. I think what changed was President Obama put forward a post-high school initiative where he said just a high school diploma is insufficient now and students should continue, not necessarily in college, but in a trade or skill set of some kind. The economic reality show that is correct but Obama said it so it's bad. All the right wing media went into a snit that the president actually thought the population should be educated. Now it's terrible.

The trend is to make our colleges training camps for professional sports and stop there. Scholarships are given to athletes and companies hire engineers from countries who suck at the Olympics

What a bunch of morons. College was the greatest time of my life. Kids grow the fuck up when they live on their own and have more responsibilities.

Not always, but in my experience in the workplace, college educated professionals are substantially more mature and professional than high school graduates. Could be an outlier, but the difference in an office setting is frightening.

Breaking News! The janitors in JFizz's office aren't as professional as the college educated professionals.

I've met a lot of really smart people that never went to college, and were completely professional. Just saying, the majority in a professional setting have a giant chip on their shoulder and want to go around talking about how a college degree is meaningless. The drama usually comes from those people too.

In fairness....those same GOP folks think robotics are bad for employment numbers....education is not solving problems...it's what kids DO with an education that matters....learning how to learn is important. A lot of liberal arts degrees are in my opinion a waste of time...you don't need a college degree to be an artist...you do to be a doctor, however

I'm literally worried that you people seem to think this means that Republicans think an education is a bad thing. You seriously do believe that is what the results of this poll mean.

    Holy fuck.
